Review film «Greta» – Soft documentary on the climate martyr

[ad_1]

MOVIE: It was like an adventure. Did it take another child to turn the adult world upside down, see through the discourse of politicians, and put the climate crisis on the agenda, once and for all? Against all odds, Greta Thunberg managed to break into the corridors of power and become the face of climate activism. Of course, you deserve a documentary. The question is which. In “Greta” we meet Thunberg behind the scenes.

We have a good idea of what the commitment has cost you and what you have accomplished, but it will happen. The more I see, the more I am convinced that personal approach does not serve the message it will convey so powerfully. Would Greta want a documentary like that, which is poor in perspectives and other voices? The weather issue needs a heroine, Greta is the perfect candidate, but here the illumination and debate are put aside to linger full of pathos on her legendary heroic journey. This is a documentary for fans.

Important stalking

Director Nathan Grossman has followed Greta since she sat alone with her homemade cardboard poster outside the Riksdag. “Why aren’t you at school?” ask passersby. It wasn’t long before his idealistic scam – school strike over the climate – spread to every corner of the world. The documentary tells the story of a schoolgirl’s personal anxiety turned collective.

The director chose to accompany her as early in the trip as a first, and it’s a promising start. We followed Greta for two years, from the school strike to the little chat with a little Macron (“and … do you read a lot about the weather?” In much worse English than Greta). The journey ends with a grueling journey across the Atlantic to reach the UN climate summit in New York, which must be said to be the highlight of the documentary.

Play for the gallery

How could a talkative and thoughtful girl provoke the world’s retirees and top politicians? “A mentally ill Swedish boy!” as stated on Fox News. Ultimately, the documentary deals with all the criticisms and we would like you to focus more here.

At one point we heard Greta like a forest eagle from hateful comments. After watching “Greta”, one can, along with her, laugh at the condescending criticisms of the critics about her as an attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and hysterical. They are so far from reality. Greta is nothing more than a fiery soul who skipped school. A curious girl with a photographic memory. We see the real picture, and it’s a necessary contribution that shuts down all conspiracy theories about the political puppet reading his mother’s script.

A large part of the documentary is dedicated to his life with Asperger syndrome. As she says: The diagnosis helps her see through the noise. Suddenly, you can get laser focus and read about greenhouse gases with an enthusiasm that is in short supply. In the most painful moments, he stoically tells about missed birthday invitations and experiences of bullying, by adults, but mostly by other children. It is moving to see how selfless she is and how unnatural it is for her to be in the center of media attention. But it would be done with various perspectives, be it from a partner, a teacher or a psychologist. In the long run, it will probably be one-sided.

Behind the scenes

“Greta” alternates between being a fly on the wall and playing through selected montages with Greta’s voiceover. These montages are long and here it resembles a single long spoken speech. As a personal study, it’s not too bad, as long as the element is Greta’s fascinating courage.

But to get something out of the documentary, you have to believe that it is a hero who adores, who does not want to dialogue or illuminate the Inconvenient Truth. No climate skeptic will be convinced if they stumble upon this flawless documentary. Every now and then it gets annoyingly polished and obviously intended for fans and they have already converted.

At the same time, I understand the director’s intentions: it’s hard to say something critical about the self-sacrificing girl and her mission without her coming out unfortunate. But I would like to see another documentary about the environmental activist, the climate martyr, who dared to discuss the issue rather than praise the person. I’m sure Greta would have liked it too.
