Protests in Washington DC: three detainees at the White House – VG

WASHINGTON DC (VG) As US President Donald Trump follows the election results from the White House, protesters have gathered outside.

A group of several hundred protesters moves through the streets of the capital around midnight local time, shouting slogans against the police.

A video on Twitter also shows that an American flag was set on fire.

Just 50 meters from where VG stands in Black Lives Matter Plaza near the White House, fireworks were lit as the group passed.

So far, three people have been arrested in connection with riots, writes NBC Washington.

Earlier in the evening, rhythmic screams from Black Lives Matter could be heard, and large banners were displayed with “Eliminate Trump” and “Trump lies all the time.”

He believes there is some danger that Trump will not accept the election result if he loses.

– I think that people can take to the streets after these elections.

Several of those present also appear to be prepared for chaos at night: many bring helmets and gas masks, which they have hanging on the outside of their backpacks. Many shops in the city also used Monday to cover windows and doors with wooden boards.

There are also several police officers in the area, but most are within a couple of blocks. If things go from being peaceful to more chaotic, they can move quickly.

– It is not clear if we will get a result tonight, maybe not even until later in the week. So we’re just not completely sure what will happen, Police Chief Peter Newsham tells NBC Washington.
