- Southampton 1-0 Liverpool
– If you are a neutral viewer, you will love it!
That’s what Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp said before tonight’s game against Southampton at St. Mary’s Stadium.
Klopp aimed for equality in the Premier League, where he is fairly close in the top ten.
With a win over Southampton, Liverpool could move from Manchester United to the top. But the match was tough as expected. And it ended pointless for Liverpool.
Danny Ings put the home team ahead before two minutes were up. It was a practice free kick where James Ward-Prowse served in the back room. Trent Alexander-Arnold was passive and Ings threw the ball over Alisson Becker.
With 88 minutes to go, it was a sea of time for Liverpool to tie and pass. But a relatively poor match ended 1-0 for Southampton.
When the final whistle sounded, Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhüttl dropped to his knees and laughed.
– He had tears in his eyes for the victory. When you see guys fighting with everything they have, it makes me very proud, he says.
– Against Liverpool you have to play a perfect game. And I thought we did. We were under great pressure. Defending around the area became the key today. At the same time you have to try to play soccer. We did it in a good way, says Hasenhüttl.
Liverpool pressed hard on the glutes, but failed. Neither did Mohamed Salah, who before the clinch had a spectacular statistic against Southampton at St. Mary’s.
Seven goals in six games counted theirs. Only Robbie Fowler has better stats against Southampton with eight goals. But Salah was unsuccessful in the south of England on Monday night.
– What was disappointing? How much time do we have asked Liverpool manager Klopp in a post-match interview.
– The start of the game, of course. Not just the goal, but the start in general. Congratulations to Southampton, they deserved the win.
Three points lost for Liverpool is a gift package for Ole Gunnar Solskjær and Manchester United.
Both teams have 33 points. But United have played one less game.
The case is being updated!
