Postpone the Lillehammer World Cup

According to plan, the World Cup for cross-country skiing, jumping and combined should have been organized in Lillehammer between 4-6. December, but on Thursday afternoon the plans were postponed.

– Based on the difficult time we are in, the uncertainty and the consequences associated with covid-19, the Norwegian Ski Federation believes that it is not correct to host the World Cup in Lillehammer now. We would prefer to work to find new dates in consultation with the FIS and the local organizer later this winter, and at the same time consider the possibility of organizing more national competitions for the best sports, says ski president Erik Røste.

The Minister of Culture and the health authorities have been informed of the decision of the ski board.

– The decision of the Ski Federation is sensible, and although we all wish that the World Cup had been held in December, I appreciate that the Ski Federation now takes responsibility in the difficult situation in which we find ourselves, says the Minister of Abid Raja culture (V) to NTB.

When the FIS determined this year’s schedule, they added several “free weekends” considering that some World Cup stops could be exposed to the crown. Among other things, there is a three-week gap between Falun on January 31 and Nove-Mesto on February 20, and it is natural to believe that there may be a relevant period of time to organize the World Cup weekend.

The FIS plan for the Cross Country World Cup has been criticized recently:

– I think they’re a bit naive. The easiest way is to run it normally, run a copy paste in Word, and print. But I think the IBU approach increases the likelihood of implementing it, biathlete Tarjei Bø recently told Dagbladet.
