After 45 minutes, the Quintana Hospital arrived at the São João Hospital. There he was hooked up to an Ecmo heart and lung machine. It must have saved his life in the first place. Alfredo Quintana was intubated and kept in an artificial coma.

Alfredo Quintana came from Cuba to Portugal in 2011. He has played 431 games for Porto and 72 internationals for Portugal. It was a cornerstone of the club’s team that beat champion Kiel in last season’s Champions League.

Quintana faced Norway in both last year’s European Championship and this year’s World Cup. But sixth and tenth place Portugal stood out, while Alfredo Quintana was nominated for the All Star team at the European Championships.

Only half a day later, the accident was resolved and on Friday came the sad news of the death of the star goalkeeper.
