Long career

Cardin was also the man behind the so-called “bubble dress”, which he came up with in 1954. He was born in Italy in 1922, but emigrated to France as a child. The fashion designer has worked for several major fashion houses such as Paquin, Schiaparelli and Dior.

According to Vogue, Cardin learned to be a tailor at age 17, before working for Paquin, where he helped make costumes with Jean Cocteau and Christian Bérard for the film “Beauty and the Beast.”

Concerned about unisex fashion

It was in 1950 that Cardin started on his own, and from 1959 he presented ready-to-wear collections in addition to haute couture collections.

Cardin was interested in unisex fashion, which was experimental at times, but his designs have been used all over the world throughout the years. In 1960, he introduced a zipper in front of the garment to eliminate differences between the sexes, according to Store norske leksikon.

The collections have often had a recurring theme, such as the space collection in 1964. His name can be found on brands of various types, from sunglasses to wine.
