TALK ABOUT THE TIME: Karsten Warholm (24) broke with 47.10 seconds in the season debut in the 400m hurdles in Monaco on August 14 (pictured), then lowered his personal record and the European record to 46.78 just over a week later. Photo: MATTHIAS HANGST / REUTERS

The event organizer picked up Karsten Warholm (24) and his trainer Leif Olav Alnes (63) in a private jet. NRK athletic expert Jann Post believes there is a lot to a world record.

– He’s very attractive now. The organizer presents the solutions. They have been incredibly good at facilitating, with people in management who have done a lot to make this happen. It’s just a matter of playing and counting later, says Leif Olav Alnes.

It refers to the duo’s mode of transportation, event director Jan Zelezny (world javelin record holder) and Karsten Warholm’s chance to run under the 46.78-second world record in the traditional “Golden Spike” event in Ostrava on Tuesday night.

Karsten Warholm posted this photo of seeing for himself and coach Leif Olav Alnes on Instagram before the duo’s departure from Oslo to Ostrava in a private jet on Sunday:

– It is possible in that course tomorrow night. There world records were set in the past. Usain Bolt has been there. The course is fast enough and the competition is on par with the best in Europe. External conditions will be better than in Stockholm, says Jann Post.

Longtime NRK athletic and cross-country commentator, along with Olympic gold winner Vebjørn Rodal and NRK veteran Karen Marie Ellefsen, will comment on the Ostrava competition. Karsten Warholm’s record attempt starting at 8.35pm will be broadcast live on NRK 1, the rest of the star-studded competition on NRK 2 starting at 6.30pm.

28 years have passed since American Kevin Young set the current world record during the 1992 Barcelona Olympic final. Until recently, it was considered, like many other athletic world records, impossible to break.

A year ago, however, Karsten Warholm came close by leaps and bounds when he won the Diamond League final in Zurich in 46.92 seconds. After making his season debut in the 400m hurdles with a 47.10 in Monaco just over three weeks ago, 10 days later he was 10/100 from becoming a world record holder.

46.78 seconds at the Stockholm Stadium were, to put it mildly, sensationally strong, considering the conditions and the fact that he “crashed” on the last stern.

– It takes a lot of mental work to get used to, Jann Post answers questions about the fact that Karsten Warholm this crown season has practically completed his solo super races, without the pressure of competitors close to his level, and without the pressure of the audience.

– It would have been different if he “only” ran to win, and not to empty himself to the maximum at a given moment like now. It’s easier to run shorter distances by yourself, but it’s still a mentally difficult job to build, says the athletics association’s top sporting director, Erlend Slokvik.

In Ostrava there are around 5000 spectators in the stands.

– You do not get anything for free from external circumstances. This is the internal pressure of the trainer and 600 to 800 hours of training. They’ve found something here now that seems motivating, says Jann Post, and he’s referring to the world record for “one thing.”

He adds that he believes Karsten Warholm would run “terribly fast” in the here and now, if the start had been for a World Cup final under normal circumstances.

He also points to coach Leif Olav Alne’s mantra “better done than well said” as an explanation of why all eyes in the athletics world are on Karsten Warholm: “All eyes on Warholm,” writes World Athletics (formerly Federation Athletics International) in his preface to Ostrava. Convention.
