All minks in Denmark must be euthanized for infection control reasons, the Danish government demanded last week. Now they admit that they had not done their homework.

Last week, all Danish mink breeders were informed that all mink in the country must die after a mutated coronavirus began to spread to mink in North Jutland.

The only problem was that the Danish government had no legal authority to order the killing of healthy animals.

On Tuesday, the Danish government sent a new letter in which it changes its wording from ordering the mass killing of the mink to asking for it. At the same time, work is underway on possible legislative changes that could give the government the authority to demand it.

However, Danish mink farmers say there is no turning back and the industry will continue to kill.

– It is a terrible and difficult situation, that an industry closes immediately. But there is no going back. Our organization’s leadership is in complete agreement with that, says leader Tage Pedersen at Danske Minkavlere.

The carnage is in full swing. Because it will happen so quickly, mass graves several kilometers long have now been dug in a military training area in Holstebro, he writes. Dagbladet Holstebro-Struer.

Each tomb is 3 meters wide, 2.5 meters deep, and 2.5 kilometers long. 10 inches of lime are added to the bottom to eliminate the risk of infection. Then a meter thick layer of dead mink is put on to rot. The animals are covered with lime again, before covering the grave with a meter of earth, writes the newspaper.

The burial takes place near a local bathing water and on Sunday about 200 people demonstrated and observed a minute of silence for the bathing water.

– People are shocked and angry. They ask where democracy has gone. It is as if this happened in the twilight and darkness of the night. I don’t understand that a state can function like this, says Per E. Østgaard, member of the Nørre Felding civic association for Denmark. TV 2.

On Tuesday, Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen apologized to mink farmers because an order for the killing of healthy animals was also sent, when there was only legal authority to submit a request to that effect.

The fear is that the mutated virus will spread. It had previously been estimated that killing all mink populations could cost up to DKK 5 billion.
