Brighton director Paul Barber tells the club’s website that it is not a desirable solution.
“We understand that very difficult circumstances mean that all alternatives must be considered, but we do not support a solution in which we have to play our remaining matches on a neutral path,” he says.
– Obviously, we all have to make commitments, and we fully understand that fighting for empty seats seems to be a necessary commitment. But at a crucial point in the season, games on the neutral field can, in our opinion, be detrimental to the integrity of the tournament.
Big downside
Five of the remaining nine games for the downed Brighton would be home games, four of them against major clubs Arsenal, Manchester United, Liverpool and Manchester City.
– The downside to not meeting these teams in their own arena and in a family environment is obvious, says Barber.
– It may be an advantage to play the remaining games away on a neutral path, but the schedule is not balanced and we don’t play our first 29 games that way.
Brighton has five teams behind them at the table and is two points above relegation.
Not asked
British newspapers wrote Saturday that Brighton’s sand is among those considered to be used at the entrance. It will not help the club as no one should be allowed to play in their homeland.
– The league, the authorities or the police have not asked us to make our stadium available for games. I can’t answer why we are mentioned in the media, says Barber.
One of the reasons for playing on a neutral field is to avoid the shock of local fans while matches are in progress. It is also advisable to choose lanes that allow the police to easily prevent people from gathering nearby.
Despite a reluctance to play on the neutral field, Brighton supports the plan to complete the season.
– We want to end the series, as long as it can be done in safe conditions for our players and other staff. Our earnings, and consequently many jobs, depend on finding a way to resume combat activity as soon as possible, but health, safety and justice must come first, says Paul Barber.
