A man has died after several stab wounds in Birmingham. Seven people are injured. According to the mayor of the city, there appears to be a connection between the stabbings.
Police have declared a “serious incident” in Birmingham city center, following several stabbings in the city.
West Midlands police first received reports of a stabbing at around 1:30 on Sunday night. Later reports of more came in.
On Sunday morning, the police announced on Twitter that one person had died and seven were injured, two of them seriously injured.
– I’m sorry to have to announce that one of the people has died from his injuries. Two others remain hospitalized, seriously injured. They are still receiving treatment as a result of the injuries they received during the attack, Birmingham police Steve Graham said during a news conference on Sunday.
Five of the victims suffered minor injuries.
– As a result, we have opened a homicide investigation. Obviously, we are at an early stage of this research, Grahams says.
Birmingham Police are searching for a suspect, who is being identified and located.
The police encourage people who have been in the area for the relevant period of time to get in touch if they have seen anything.
– Since we haven’t found the suspect yet, I know some are nervous. What I mean is that there is a significant police presence, both armed and unarmed, in the center today, Grahams says.
– So, if people go downtown today, I’ll tell them: don’t be afraid, but be attentive.
