On Thursday it became clear that Hedvig Mollestad won the Edvard Award for his album “Ekhidna” in the category “open class”.

It was revealed on the NRK Klassisk Vorspiel radio show.

– When we found out she was nominated, we wanted to do something fun, says Per Sundnes.

Together with his colleague Frode Larsen, they invited Hedvig to play in a new column, which they invented for the occasion.

– She has practiced like a rascal and we were excited with what she had prepared. What she didn’t know was that it was all bullshit, says Frode.

– Should have played in Deep Purple

The two describe Hedvig as a musician who is too big for Norway and therefore wanted to help pay tribute to him.

– It’s a combination of something incredibly talented and something you hardly believe until you hear it, says Per.

Mollestad plays guitar-based jazz rock, which is often placed under labels like power jazz and prog rock.

The music is played without a voice and Larsen describes her as one of his great heroes.

– It’s so unique and good that it should have been in Deep Purple, thinks Per Sundnes.

He was surprised in the study

When Hedvig walked into the studio Thursday morning, he knew nothing about the awards ceremony. The only thing that surprised her was that she was allowed to return to the radio show so early.

– Did you forget I was here a month ago? She asked.

Per quickly took it away and explained that all his regular guests should be invited to perform artistic music.

– We invite those we love the most in this world, and you are the first. We look forward to hearing him play, says Per.

Shortly after, the door opens and two TONO representatives enter with the Edvard Prize.

The Edvard Prize is designed by Magne Furuholmen.

The Edvard Award is named after Edvard Grieg and is an award that TONO has awarded annually since 1998.

Hedvig Mollestad lunges backwards, as if he’s doing a guitar riff with enthusiasm and joy.

– This is really fantastic. You are nominated along with other musicians, who have also made a similar effort. I’d like to give a shot to Bugge Wesseltoft and Broen, who also deserved an Edvard Award.

You can listen to the entire award ceremony with Hedvig Mollestad at NRK Klassisk Vorspiel on Friday 4th September at 15-17.
