Magnus Carlsen’s publicity for his foreign betting sponsor has prompted NRK to perform at their traditional Christmas events.

As VG mentioned on Saturday, Grandmaster Magnus Carlsen is playing “The Champions Chess Tour” on NRK this Christmas with advertising for his sponsor Unibet on the billboard behind him. Then the state channel said they had sent out a strong request for this ad to be removed.

On the second day of the tournament, the gaming company is constantly represented in the background of its live broadcast.

– We talked until the broadcast, and just before the broadcast it was clear that they would not change the exposure. This is probably because we have a slightly different opinion on how the agreement should be interpreted, and that in the dialogue beforehand we had the impression that they would take into account our desire to avoid publicity, says Torbjørn Sarre-Jensen, editor-in-chief of NRK-sporten. .

The solution for NRK has been to vary between still images of Carlsen – without advertising – and its live broadcast with advertising, with the intention of limiting the exposure that the foreign gaming company receives in its broadcast.

– How do you feel that so far they have not complied with your request?

– I wish we had focused on the content of the broadcast and not on the wall behind Magnus. It’s a shame, but I think we can find out in the next few days, says Sarre-Jensen, announcing further talks on Monday.

The editor-in-chief says that the dialogue with the tournament organizer, which is Magnus Carlsen’s company, Play Magnus, is continuing and he believes that the combination they have chosen works well.

Marketing of advertising from game companies other than Norsk Tipping and Norsk Rikstoto to Norwegian viewers is prohibited, while tournament director Arne Horvei on The Champions Chess Tour argued on Saturday that the broadcast is from abroad and that the billboards are like normal advertising in the sand.

VG has not been in contact with Horvei on Sunday, nor has his father and coach Henrik Carlsen.

– Basically, it is the case that all marketing directed at Norwegians is illegal. Then there is an assessment of the marketing itself and how it is organized in each individual case. Sports broadcasts from abroad are advertised and sent to many countries, says department director Henrik Nordal at the Norwegian Lottery Authority, saying they have not yet considered this specific case.

He emphasizes that it is not about where the ad is sent, but whether the ad is targeting Norwegians which applies.

“We always think it is a shame that there is illegal marketing on all surfaces, and it is something we continually work with,” he says generally.

P.S! Carlsen beat Dubov in the first game on Sunday, after four draws on Saturday.
