Remarkable 2 has been named one of the 100 Best Innovations in 2020. Now the company is behind explosive growth.

The American news magazine Time Magazine is behind the award.

Remarkable 2 is among the products that have been voted best productivity, and in total across all categories, there are 100 new innovations in 2020 that are on the list.

– It’s a lot of fun, says founder and CEO Magnus Wanberg (36) in Remarkable to Nettavisen.

Focuses on productivity

Remarkable launched in 2016. Three years earlier, Wanberg had the idea for the invention after seeing how his colleagues still preferred to write notes on paper, even though they had smartphones and laptops available.

Since then, they have released two blackboards for writing notes and drawing, which should feel like regular paper. The second writing board, which is an improved version of the first, was released in March this year. This is why they have received great recognition, not only in Time. The main websites like American The Verge, Gizmodo and Mashable or British Techradar have also praised the product, despite some reservations, especially related to the high price, which is on par with an iPad.

Wanberg explains why he thinks they were recognized for product productivity.

– We try to create products inspired by paper, which gives people more attention and focus, which in turn generates productivity, says Wanberg.

He explains that the product has all the benefits of paper and the benefits of tablets, in the way that you can share everything you do digitally. But what they think are the downsides of regular tablets, they’ve removed, like email and social media apps and alerts.

Different from Apple

He thinks his biggest competitor is pencil and paper, and he thinks his writing board is very different from Apple’s iPad.

– Ipad is a tablet computer, and it has a luminous glass screen. We have a completely different surface, which feels like paper, and functionally there are completely different worlds, he explains.

– When you write on the ipad, you don’t think as well as when you write on Remarkable, he says.

– How can you compete against Apple and get Norwegians to choose Remarkable?

– We don’t offer anything that stomps Apple on the toes. We do not see them as a competitor, but as an important partner. You can download our application in the application store; there are all your Remarkable documents.

Lose money – international betting

In 2019, the company had operating income of NOK 368 million and pre-tax profit of less NOK 31.2 million.

– Everything is going according to plan. We invested and developed the company, raising more than NOK 100 million from US investors last year, says Wanberg.

– So when do you plan to make money?

– It’s not the most important thing now. Now, the most important thing is to learn more about customers to make better products and strengthen the company. The goal is to build a global technology company, then the money will eventually come, he says.

It won’t say anything about how long they plan to bet before they have to start making money.

Must hire new every week

Despite last year’s losses, the company is investing heavily.

They have gone from seven employees in 2016 to 130 employees in 2020. In 2021, they plan to hire one person per week.

– It’s very suitable for that, if there isn’t more. We have to build a great apparatus to be able to reach international level, says Wanberg.

Not only is it important to reach people from all over the world, but they will also continue to develop the products and have enough employees working on the technology side.

– It will be exciting to see what the future brings, he says.

On Tuesday, they opened their first pop-up store in central Oslo, to give people the opportunity to try their product.

They want to reach more people and therefore see the benefit of having a physical store. Remarkable has also started a collaboration with Elkjøp in the Nordic region.

However, it’s unclear how long the pop-up will have.
