HAMAR (VG) It is not yet clear who will be Ståle Solbakken’s (52) right-hand man for the Norwegian national team. But it will not be Kjetil Rekdal (52), although he himself does not want to close the door.

Both are former stars of the national team, both were born in 1968, both have houses in Hamar, but only one of them will be part of the apparatus of the Norwegian national team in the coming years.

Solbakken excludes Rekdal from being relevant as an assistant coach.

– Kjetil is probably not your typical number two, and then I take a very important piece from HamKam that we would like to have in the Eliteserien again, Solbakken tells VG.

He took advantage of his last day before the official start as coach of the Norwegian national team to witness the 1-1 match between his two Norwegian soccer loves HamKam and Lillestrøm on Sunday afternoon.

So it was not to search for a potential assistant.

– He controls it himself. It gets very speculative. I love soccer and I think soccer is fun to work with, so we’ll see what happens, Rekdal tells VG after the game.

– Are you saying you’re not the most typical number two?

– We can take one day at a time in football, it’s better. I’ve got a week left here, so we’ll see what happens after that, says the man who has changed HamKam’s season since taking over a team in last place with three points in the 10th round of the series:

One man who seems far more relevant as Solbakken’s right-hand man is his faithful partner Bård Wiggen.

– Bård is of course relevant, but it is also not a matter of course that those who have been with before should be with. Sometimes everyone needs new ways of putting things together, but of course I have a close dialogue with Bård and I always love him. We’ve been together and we’ve been through a lot of good things, but also a lot of pain, says Solbakken.

On Monday he will step down as the new director of the national team. As well as completing the job of assembling his team, which he says he’s started a bit with, on Monday he will make his first official appearance on paper in the stands during Vålerenga’s home game against Rosenborg in the Eliteserien.
