The conservative-led government will phase out sales of gasoline and diesel cars. 8 out of 10 conservative voters say no to the law’s ban.

A key part of the government’s climate policy is the goal of no new gasoline and diesel cars from 2025. The policy enjoys strong support in the Storting, and only the Socialist People’s Party and the Green Party have a marked opposition.

But one prohibition of the law meet the coldness of a vast majority of the population.

In a survey conducted by Norstat on behalf of the automobile organization Amcar, only 15 percent say yes to the ban and 71 percent say no. (See data box for full figures)

The only party with a majority among its own voters in favor of the ban is the ODM. It is in the conservatives, the Popular Socialist Party and the Green Party where the opposition is greatest. Among the Conservatives’ own voters, 80 percent say they are against the ban and only 11 percent support the party’s own policy.

Amcar leader Hilberg Ove Johansen is concerned about the consequences of the policy and believes that conservatives are behind the MDGs.

– They are behind the ODM and the City Council, and that worries us. We do not recognize the conservatives in Oslo. They have voted in favor of no-go zone studies, and they want zero emission zones, and they are not in tune with their own voters, Johansen tells Nettavisen.

Opinion poll on car bans

Opinion poll conducted by Norstat on behalf of Amcar Norway. 1650 respondents.

The Storting has decided that new passenger car sales in 2025 will be zero-emission cars (battery or hydrogen) only. Do you think this is a realistic goal?

  • Yes: 20 percent.
  • No: 66 percent.
  • I don’t know: 14 percent.
  • H Voters: 23/65.

Some parties and organizations want the sale of new gasoline and diesel cars to be banned from 2025. Do you agree with such a ban?

  • Yes: 15 percent
  • No: 71 percent
  • I don’t know: 14 percent
  • M Voters: 11/80

The government’s own climate plan presented two weeks ago does not support a legal ban. Instead, the government puts it this way:

“Through 2025, car taxes, along with other instruments, will help make it easier for us to achieve the goal of new car sales almost consisting of zero-emission cars by 2025.” Today, 10 percent of new car sales are zero emissions.

The government will also give urban municipalities the power to introduce bans in areas, as the MDG councilor Lan Marie Berg in Oslo has wanted.

One of the measures to achieve this is that municipalities have the opportunity to ban gasoline and diesel cars in the selection zones of cities. The only exception are emergency vehicles.

– This measure has no global climate effect. It is completely wrong to punish Norwegian motorists who choose increasingly environmentally friendly cars, he says.

– But should we get the change we need within the deadlines, is it necessary with stronger bleach?

– I do not think so. Prohibition and coercion go against their purpose and have no support from the population. Norway is the best in the world when it comes to electric cars. Eight percent of Norwegian emissions from private cars are decreasing. Plus, climate targets apply until 2035, and by then we’ll have been able to do a lot to slash emissions, he says.

On Saturday, there is an annual meeting in Oslo Høyre. One of the central contentious issues is the automobile and the climate. The Amcar leader has a clear message for politicians at the annual meeting:

– In Oslo, the Conservatives have voted together with the MDGs and the city council to make everyday life worse for motorists without the measures having any documented climate effect. At the annual meeting on Saturday, the Oslo Conservatives should distance themselves from this kind of token politics and rather listen to their own voters.

In a resolution called “Smart, Green and Comprehensive Mobility in Oslo”, which the party will discuss at the annual meeting, the resolution committee is in favor of “satellite-based road fees” and higher taxes for electric cars. The party also proposes a rush hour rate for those who take public transport.

The transport policy spokesman for the Oslo Conservatives, Nicolai Langfeldt, responds in a comment that he is surprised by Amcar’s criticism.

– I must honestly admit that I am surprised by the criticisms of Amcar. Efforts are underway in Oslo and around the world to improve local air quality and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. I’m sure the people at Amcar are concerned about that too. By the way, it is not the case that conservatives want to ban the sale of gasoline and diesel cars, as I experience some people mistakenly believe, he says and adds:

– We mainly want to continue the benefits of the electric car so that even more people choose a zero emission car when they sell or dispose of their old car, as we see that people are now doing it as fast as they can. When it comes to zero-emission zones, the Conservatives have a completely different approach than the city council. It seems that most want to pass a large zero-emission zone over everyone’s heads in Oslo almost overnight. It is completely irrelevant to us.

However, it opens up to zero-emission zones in the city, which means that in some places it is not allowed to buy gasoline or diesel cars.

– We want to gradually test zero-emission zones around selected locations in the city center, in close dialogue with businesses and those who live there. In these areas, in principle, it will not be allowed with a fossil car, regardless of whether it is produced in the US, Europe or Asia, says Langfeldt.
