Norovirus and communicable diseases: – Predicting the effect of Sweden in Norway

The National Institute of Public Health states that the peak season for common illnesses caused by norovirus is approaching and therefore recommends taking care of hand hygiene to avoid the spread of the highly contagious virus. Deputy Health Director Espen Rostrup Nakstad believes that we will experience a positive effect in Sweden.

– What we have seen in Norway this year is that the incidence of infectious diseases in general, including the flu, has been very low. There have been almost no cases of influenza, Nakstad tells Dagbladet and continues:

– What we know about norovirus is that it often comes from Sweden. It is first about kindergartens and old people’s homes, and then about the rest of society. Now that there is so little border traffic and people have so little contact with each other, I probably think it will be less than it usually is. But it remains to be seen, because we have not yet reached winter, and this is something that usually happens in January and February.

– What is the probability of triple disease with covid-19, influenza and periodontal disease at the same time?

– Everything is possible. But the less corona we have and the less flu, the less likely it is that we will contract several diseases at the same time. Now a lot of people have been vaccinated against influenza, all vaccines have been exhausted and we have hardly had any cases of influenza. So luckily, the chance of getting the flu and then going straight to coronary heart disease is very, very low.

Triple disease

The department’s director, Line Vold, also doesn’t think the risk of triple disease is particularly high.

– There is always some risk that you can be infected with several types of agents at the same time, but now we see so far that seasonal flu has apparently been mild throughout the world, and this indicates that it will also be so in Norway. In addition, we have these general infection control measures in place, which protect against many types of infections. So we see that the number of reports reaching us about infectious diseases in general is now decreasing, Vold tells Dagbladet.

In addition, Violence encourages careful hand hygiene.

– Occasional illnesses are unpleasant, but generally short-lived, and hooks are usually reached quickly. There is a season for it every winter, and it’s no wonder so far, but it’s a reminder to be careful with hand hygiene, for example. It is also important that you are home when you are sick, so that you do not infect others.

Outbreaks in nursing homes

The department director acknowledges that norovirus outbreaks in nursing homes, at the same time as the corona epidemic is on the rise, can be challenging.

– The symptoms of norovirus infection are different from those of covid-19. This is a common illness with vomiting and diarrhea in the first place. But it is clear that there may be an additional burden. For example, it is challenging to have a norovirus outbreak in a nursing home. But for most people, it probably doesn’t matter much, other than that it’s uncomfortable while it’s on.
