– No one with an office job would have accepted closed bathrooms for half the year?

71 percent of long-haul drivers experience closed toilets along the highway. And 40 percent of transport workers in Norway struggle to find a place to go to the bathroom during working hours.

Shows a survey conducted by Yrkestrafikkforbundet among 2,000 members; Bus drivers, truck drivers, warehouse employees, and other transportation workers.

To the question “How much do you agree with these statements? It is difficult to access toilets and other necessary facilities when I work”, 40 percent answered yes.

The background for the survey is World Toilet Day, November 19. Actually, this is an official UN day. In this regard, employee organizations around the world focus on the importance of access to toilets during working hours.

This is Yrkestrafikkforbundet (YTF)

The Professional Traffic Association has 12,000 members in the transport industry and is, among other things, the association that organizes the most bus drivers in Norway.

YTF has more than 400 shop stewards across the country and has members in buses, freight, warehousing and logistics, rail, white collar, taxis, auto salvage, construction transportation, cranes, environmental transportation, mobility industry and parking.

– Save money

The union leader of the Professional Traffic Association, Jim Klungnes, is not surprised.

– This is a recurring theme in many parts of the transportation industry. We constantly get messages about bus drivers having to take final stops without restroom breaks, or having to make do with the holidays without toilet paper and proper cleaning. At best, this has been forgotten in planning, often enough to save money, Klungnes says.

We also see that the Norwegian Public Roads Administration closes toilets in much of the country in winter. Then they save money on heating, shovels, maintenance and washing. We also saw toilets closed due to the spread of infection during the corona pandemic, rather than proper cleaning. They do not believe that the road is actually a workplace for tens of thousands of professional drivers throughout the year. No one with an office job has likely found themselves in the bathrooms at work closed for half the yearKlungnes says in a press release.

Not all toilet facilities along the highways are from the same new date.

Diesel sales are falling; this means that more people are losing their jobs

– Neither pleasant nor healthy

The Yrkestrafikkforbundet survey confirms this. In addition to 71% of long-distance transport drivers answering that they sometimes come to the toilets along the road that is closed, 47% answer that they are not satisfied with the quality of the toilets they can use during the working day.

– It is not pleasant or healthy to have to stay several more kilometers because the Norwegian Public Highway Administration closes many of the opportunities for professional drivers to go to the bathroom. We must not deprive an entire occupational group of the opportunity to make predictable visits to dobe during working hours, says Klungnes.
