In November comes a new generation of game consoles. Who wins Playstation and Xbox?

Seven years have passed since the last one. Now a new generation of game consoles is hitting the market. Who will win the battle between Sony’s Playstation and Microsoft’s Xbox? Benoit Tessier / Reuters / NTB scanpix

So far Sony has had their Playstation 4. Xbox has had their Xbox One. They both have different sub-releases. Now the gaming industry is ready for a whole new generation – more powerful machines where you can play more spectacular games.

The demand is huge. Guess what? This year, the whole world has stayed home. Nintendo increased its revenue six times between April and June. In total, the gaming industry is expected to have a staggering turnover of $ 159.3 billion by 2020.

2.7 billion people play games in the world. But competition between companies is fierce.

It’s mostly about games

– The launch of new game consoles is always incredibly exciting for game lovers. When two consoles get so close, you get really excited, says Rune Fjeld Olsen. He is a game expert at Level Up and a game critic at NRK.

Olsen believes that one factor will be decisive:

– It’s the games. It has always been the most crucial.

Each console has its own exclusive games. Playstation has series like God of War, Ratchet and Clank and Spiderman. Xbox has had aura and Gears of war. Soon there will be new games in several of these series. Olsen still doesn’t see a clear winner.

Rune Fjeld Olsen is a game expert at Level Up and a game critic at NRK. He believes that there is an important factor that will determine who wins the console battle. Private

– It is completely impossible to say who has the best game now. It’s rare that launch games are the best. The games will get better in a year or two.

Henrik Møllegård from House of Nerds thinks that Playstation has a slight edge:

– Playstation has a stronger portfolio of exclusive games. Xbox exclusive titles aren’t as exciting as they used to be, he says.

Møllegård highlights another factor that can determine: Playstation has an advantage.

Sony’s Playstation 2 is the most popular console of all time. He is now 20 years old. Aftenposten

– When most people think of consoles, they probably think of Playstation

Playstation 2 is the best-selling console of all time. It sold 155 million copies. Playstation 4 takes second place.

– When most people think of consoles, they probably think of Playstation before they think of Xbox, says Møllegård.

Since many own and know the Playstation before, he does not think that many will change. Olsen also notes that Playstation has been strong in Norway. Playstation has had several games that “everyone” had to have. But loyalty was stronger before, according to him.

Loyalty can still overshadow a factor that has been associated with a lot of excitement: price.

Price-related stress

Microsoft’s Xbox comes in two editions. The little Xbox Series S should cost 3,299 crowns. The most powerful Xbox Series X costs 5,499 crowns. They both arrive on November 10. Pricing for Playstation 5 will be announced Wednesday night.

– My advice is that a Playstation will cost around 500 kroner more than an Xbox. I’m not concerned on behalf of Sony if the PS5 turns out to be a bit more expensive, says Olsen.

If the Xbox gets cheaper, that’s not the only advantage Microsoft has. They also offer a subscription model. You can choose to pay a monthly price for two years. This way, you won’t have to pay several thousand crowns at once.

Because a new console is expensive and price has been important in the past. When the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 arrived, both consoles were sold at a loss in an attempt to undermine the competitor.

When Sony introduced its first Playstation in 1995, there was great excitement associated with the price. The machine was powerful in its day. The public expected a fair price: at least $ 500 in the United States.

The man responsible for bringing the Playstation to the US market was named Steve Race. In the video below, you can see how he shocked the gaming world by saying three numbers that crushed the competition: 299.

The competitor of the time, Sega with its Saturn, could not compete on price. They lost the battle against Sony.

This fall, price won’t be the most important thing, video game experts believe. Olsen points out that, in any case, many will wait until prices drop.

A new game in the Ratchet & Clank series arrives at the same time as Playstation 5. This trailer shows some of what players can look forward to.

And performance?

One last point. What about the forces found in the machine? How important will it be to processors, memory, and hard drives after all?

– I think he will have little to say. Xbox is the strongest, but when they arrive at the same time, power won’t have as much to say as games and loyalty, says Møllegård.

Olsen agrees. Performance means little to most people and a lot to very few. In any case, both Playstation and Xbox will offer better graphics and shorter loading times than their predecessors. It will elevate the gaming experience for everyone, according to Olsen.

– What I think is most interesting is what the power of the game may have to say about details, artificial intelligence and storytelling going forward. There is a lot of virgin land. I think we can see a lot of spectacular variations in the future, says Olsen.
