Everything went wrong for Ferrari in the home race at the Monza track in Italy. The incredible drama during the race also secured a surprising winner in Formula 1.
Where everything went wrong for Ferrari, Pierre Gasly (24) and Alpha Tauri shocked the whole world of Formula 1.
The young Frenchman rose to the top and became the first driver outside of one of the top three teams to win a race since 2013.
– It’s completely unbelievable. I don’t understand what is happening now. It was a completely wild race. I’ve been through a lot in the last 18 months. It’s hard for me to understand that, says Gasly to the Formula 1 television channel.
The Frenchman has had a hard time the last two years. First, he was relegated from the best Red Bull team to Alpha Tauri after disappointing performances.
Soon after, his best friend Anthoine Hubert was killed in a Formula 2 accident.
But on Sunday afternoon he struck back with victory.
– This team has done a lot for me. They gave me my first chance. It’s an amazing day, says Gasly.
This is also the first time a Frenchman has won a Formula 1 race since 1996. Carlos Sainz and McLaren finished second, while Racing Points Lance Stroll took third place.
Nightmare for Ferrari
It was very dramatic from the beginning. Already on lap five, Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel’s brakes failed in the first harassment, and the German swept away the roadblocks on the side of the road.
So he and Ferrari had to break up the race, but the recession didn’t stop there. His teammate Charles Leclerc lost control of the rear of the car in a corner and crashed into the wall at high speed. The accident meant that his day had ended naturally, and led to a series of events that gave a historic run.
Leclerc’s accident raised a red flag for the first time since Azerbaijan in 2017, stopping the race for just over half an hour. At the same time, the undisputed leader of the race, Lewis Hamilton, received a very severe punishment for entering the depot while it was closed.
The first penalty was the reigning world champion Lewis Hamilton to last place, but the drama was not over. Max Verstappen also had to interrupt the race right after the restart, and suddenly the lead was made up of drivers who had never won or even led a Formula 1 race before.
It ended with a historic victory and a day of rejoicing at Monza.
