(Leeds 4-3 Fulham) Leeds coach Marcelo Bielsa (65) has witnessed the madness of 14 goals in two games in the club’s return to the Premier League. Against Fulham there were also three points.
Leeds impressed against defending league champions Liverpool last weekend but lost 3-4 at Anfield after Mohamed Sala took a penalty in the final minutes.
Tonight, fellow climber Fulham came to visit Elland Road, and it was a wonderful new seven-goal thriller.
– In the first half, we let Fulham play too easily outside of defense, and although we didn’t defend that badly, we fought offensively. In the second half, after we led 4-1, they came back, but it was more the result of Fulham being good than us. After 4-3, we played well, Bielsa summed up for BT Sport.
– We showed ourselves from a good side against Liverpool, and today was obviously an important game. We wanted to win, but in the end it was too exciting. There will be a few meetings during the week to see where it went wrong, but more importantly, we won, Leeds forward Patrick Bamford tells BT Sport.
It started in the fifth minute when Helder Costa was left alone on the back post in a corner. He was lucky enough to receive the ball from an opponent, before it stopped him and ended up out of reach of Fulham goalkeeper Alphonse Areola.
No chances were created with chances in the first half hour, but then it exploded.
Two penalties
Fulham was penalized when Robin Koch made an awkward foul on Joe Bryan in the box. Aleksandar Mitrovic hit the penalty at the net under Leeds goalkeeper Illan Meslier.
Seven minutes later it was Leeds’ turn to be punished when Bryan shoved Patrick Bamford from behind. Mateusz Klich was called from the penalty spot and made it 2-1 to Leeds.
Early in the second half, Leeds seemed to pierce everything. First, Bamford made it 3-1 with the goalkeeper alone after a pass from Klich in the 50th minute, and in the 57th minute, Bamford was penultimate when Costa thundered the 4-1 from 13 meters.
The lead lasted for six minutes before Fulham was cut into two rapids. Backup Bobby Reid dropped to 2-4 before Mitrovic headed in at 3-4 with half a game left. Neeskens Kebano came very close to equalizing when he hit the post shortly after.
But the game ended 4-3 for the home team, and newly promoted Fulham are off to a rocky start with two losses after being 0-3 against Arsenal last weekend.
P.S.! Stefan Johansen wasn’t even on the Fulham substitute bench.
