OSLO DISTRICT COURT (VG) A taxi driver and a passenger tried to put out the car fire with snow. The extensive security system on the property pointed in one direction: toward Laila Anita Bertheussen, according to the prosecution.

On the night of Sunday, March 10, last year, the car of then-Justice Minister Tor Mikkel Wara and his partner caught fire. The word “racist” was also scratched on the car’s right rear fender. The rear window was broken.

The cause of the fire was an open fire with a supply of flammable liquid, technical investigations showed.

Laila Anita Bertheussen was home alone. Tor Mikkel Wara (Frp), a partner and then Minister of Justice, was traveling abroad.

– Because Wara was not present at the house this weekend, there were no police officers stationed at the house, but the police patrolled the house on a regular basis, says prosecutor Marit Formo.

The fire was discovered by a taxi passing by the house. The driver and passenger stopped and tried to sigh the fire with snow, and alerted the police.

– The firefighters and several police patrols arrived at the scene, also a canine patrol and a police helicopter. They searched for unauthorized persons in the house and outside the property, says prosecutor Marit Formo during her presentation speech.

Comprehensive security

Four days after the car fire, Bertheussen was charged. Now, the prosecution believes that it has eliminated the possibility of other perpetrators besides Bertheussen. Increasingly secure home and property contributed to this conclusion. Bertheussen refuses to be behind the fire and all the other incidents.

– Evidence obtained from home security systems is critical here, says Formo, and points to a comprehensive security and surveillance system:

  • Stanley Security had installed six surveillance cameras, but only one of them was operational. It showed the driveway and if people would enter the property from the road.
  • PST had also received permission from the court to install cameras outside the property, which filmed, among other things, the driveway, the sidewalk and the mailbox.
  • An alarm system, where the sensors recorded the opening and closing hours of the door. Lighthouses were also installed on the property.

Prosecutor Formo claims that the front door had a coded latch.

“A key issue in relation to this relationship is whether it is possible that some outsiders have entered the property and started the fire without being caught by any of the security systems or cameras that were in operation at the time,” he said. I form.

Turn off the camera

VG has previously written that PST thinks it can test this course of events:

one. Bertheussen even turned off the camera that covers the car from the outside.

two. He then exited through the front door, which was detected by the door sensor.

3. She started the car herself and etched “racist” into the paint on the car’s right rear fender.

Four. He then returned to the house, which was also registered by the door sensor.

5. Then he turned the camera back on.

After the indictment, Røa’s house in Oslo was searched.

– Several convulsions were removed from the home; markers, twine, plastic bags, envelopes and stamps. This is the object that he sees repeated in various places in the prosecution. These are compared with the objects of the different incidents, says the prosecutor Formo.

– Prestige

Defender John Christian Elden says in court that he believes the criminal case against his client Laila Bertheussen has become a prestigious case for PST.

It refers, among other things, to an interview that current Police Director Benedicte Bjørnland did with Dagbladet. According to Elden, Bjørnland said in the interview that he “slept poorly the night before Bertheussen’s arrest” and expressed that it would be very regrettable if the investigation were not successful.

Elden says the following about the events of the prosecution:

– The common feature is that they do not contain anything related to DNA findings, they do not contain anything related to fingerprints. Nothing related to confessions or explanations from her, or from other people who claim that she has done this. It does not contain reviews from anyone claiming to have done so. All the traditional elements that make up a criminal case are absent in our case, says Elden.
