Ministry of the Interior, The Corona crisis | Korona will forever change the way we work

A better time is coming. We must use it to shape the working life of the future – a better working life.

This is a comment. It is the attitude of the writer that is expressed.

So we are in a new round of social isolation and home office. We are better prepared than last time. We’ve been through it before. We know what we are looking for. For better or worse.

However, the motivation is not the same. Now it is more difficult. It is dark. It’s raining. The home office is no longer so new and exciting. In fact, many who struggle with productivity, motivation, and efficiency seem pretty dull.

More and more of us work twenty-four hours a day and lose the distinction between leisure and work hours. Everything is just time.

Not taken to bed

But this is not a surprise. This summer we knew very well that autumn would bring a new outbreak of the infection. Yet it seems as though the authorities have been completely baffled, and the new rules, injunctions and bans are scrapped in the cockpit and haunting, with no obvious plan or preparation behind it.

The corona phone and test stations are understaffed and infection control measures are poorly coordinated.

I would have liked communication and public sector measures to be more coordinated. It is quite possible that there is an infection logic in the whole thing, but it has not been very clear to those I have spoken to. People perceive that the authorities are constantly on their heels, even though we have had a lot of time to prepare for the infection to flourish again.

The right choices can have everything to say

So it is up to the business community and HR departments of companies large and small to find out what is there now, tomorrow, and next week. And no one wants to be an employer who doesn’t take infection control seriously.

And the vast majority of employers know full well that it’s not just world leaders that will be remembered for how they led during this pandemic. Your employees, customers, suppliers, and team will remember you as a leader and an employer. How you lead, support, inspire, care for, and motivate your team in this pandemic can impact your business performance, now and in the future. In fact, all that can be said about whether the company survives in many cases.

Here you can read more posts from Trine Larsen.

And I want to brag about all the dedicated leaders that I have spoken to in the last few months. These are people who really take responsibility for keeping the companies they work for running. They have worked day and night to take care of employees, stay productive, and adapt to new and unclear rules.

Now we can create the working life of the future

That is why we are now working in a completely different way than we did in March. Changes in working life have accelerated. Norway has been digitized in record time, and Friday March 13, 2020 must be remembered as the day Norwegian knowledge workers went fully digital.

What can we do when we have to and want to!

It is absolutely fantastic what we have achieved. I am grateful and I think of all those who have been involved in the development of the technology that allows many of us to work and interact digitally. And it’s easy to forget that in early March, most of us were feeling a bit uncomfortable with computers or digital meetings. Changes and new habits create a new work life, more digital and, above all, more flexible.

For example, I would say that the central time has become history. We now have the opportunity to have quality time with the kids at 2pm and we can shop at the store outside of peak hours. This is one of the many changes that we must carry with us in the aftermath of the pandemic. The opportunity for a more flexible working life.

Out of jail?

Many now see the joy and benefit of a more flexible relationship with the office. They will be able to sit at home when work tasks suit them. They want meetings in combination with a walk outside or in settings other than a damp meeting room in the office.

The office, the workplace that many of us are most used to, is actually a very old invention, inspired by the first factories, which in turn were designed according to the same drawings as prisons. The goal was to give the boss maximum control over the workers. In other words, the office was not designed for the opportunities and needs we have now.

We also see that attitudes towards the office are changing in an analysis of European countries that shows that between 35 and 45 percent of the population in Germany, Denmark, France, Sweden and the Netherlands work with tasks that are possible to perform from House.

NHO believes that half of all work can now be done from home, and that the day-to-day home office life that we’ve had during the pandemic may affect how businesses run the office in the future.

Øystein Dørum at NHO believes that if the company and employees enjoy working from home several days a week, more home offices and fewer business trips can also mean that companies can reduce office costs and travel expenses.

So the new rule will be beneficial to everyone.

New requirements for the leader

While we at Hammer & Hanborg at Hammer & Hanborg write in the book Future Work Life, we have long since drifted away from the old work life.

Today we have the technology that makes it possible for many of us to do a good job no matter where in the world we are. Yes, the crown is life threatening and deadly, but now we have to try to use it to create a new flexible and mobile work life.

The fourth industrial revolution was here even before Covid-19, but this stingy pandemic gave an acceleration of digitization that we did not anticipate. And thank goodness for that.

The new leadership role is largely characterized by trust and confidence, what does the employee need to be successful? Unlike the control and adjustment of the results of the previous quarter and the last quarter. Building culture, common understanding and anchored values is more important now than ever. We have the opportunities and the technology. What has been lacking is culture and habits.

When we work more from home, we must also improve our leadership. Now managers are trained to relinquish control and free employees. Employees practice the responsibility of leading themselves in a flexible workday. Having employees who can lead themselves also requires new leadership roles. You have to work with values beyond profit. You must want to create something.

Companies that already have a trust-based management culture, agile working methods and a good understanding of self-management now have an advantage. The communication skills, the willingness to cooperate and the confidence to dare to propose both good and bad ideas from the home office has never been more important.

Everyone knows that free-range hens lay better eggs than hens in cages.

What are we going to get out of the cage?

The infection does not go away right away. This everyday life with limited social contact will last.

But much of what comes out the other side may be worth taking with us, even when we finally gain control of the coronavirus and can live more normally again.

And I am convinced that the wise Heidi Krohn Olsen is right. Caged cages do not lay eggs as well as free-range hens. So remember that even though it is heavy and dark now, we are in for some serious weeks. We should be able to overcome this, even with minimal socialization. And we must remember to bring important lessons with us and we have a unique opportunity.

Nettavisen Pluss: give all employees 10,000 crowns for Christmas: – It is important to recognize an extraordinary effort

We must seize the opportunities we see now that will create a better working life. It will be profitable and not least for all of us.

Unfortunately, I am not alone with all the data, but I am optimistic and I am convinced that after the pandemic we will have a better working life, and I am sure that we will achieve it together.

Or what you think? What do you like most about changes in your work life?
