While La Liga concluded that the 700 million euro termination clause is valid in Lionel Messi’s (33) contract with Barcelona, this is disputed by the superstar’s father and agent, Jorge Messi.
Messi’s team does not support the interpretation of the league at all and believes that the 33-year-old can leave for free.
Messi’s father and agent, Jorge Messi, sent out a press release on Friday describing La Liga as biased and claiming that his son can leave for free. It states that LaLiga’s interpretation that the termination clause of 700 million euros is still valid is incorrect.
– Without looking at other rights in the aforementioned contract and that it omits, it is obvious that the clause of 700 million euros, given clause 8.2.3.6, has no validity, he writes.
It refers to this point of the contract:
This clause does not apply when the termination of the contract by unilateral decision of the player comes into force from the end of the 2019/20 season ”.
The League reacts on Friday by standing firm and refers to this weekend’s press release. The league association believes Messi’s team misinterprets the clause.
Barcelona confirmed last week to the AP news agency that the 33-year-old wanted to leave. Messi allegedly wanted to use a clause that allowed him to terminate the contract immediately, without Barcelona being entitled to compensation.
In a press release on Sunday, La Liga, the Spanish league association, made it clear that the 700 million euro buy-out clause is valid. The League made it clear that the player’s license would not be released until the clause was met.
The deadline to activate the clause was actually June 10, but Messi’s side believes the deadline may be postponed because the corona pandemic extended the season until August.
Barça insists that the term of the clause has expired, and points to the contractual purchase price of 700 million euros.
