Martin Johnsrud Sundby (36) hoped to show himself to the leadership of the national team, but the season opener was a major setback for the veteran.
BEITOSTØLEN (Nettavisen): Sundby stated to Nettavisen before Saturday’s 15km in Beitostølen that he wants to be allowed to start at the opening of the World Cup in Ruka next weekend. At the same time, he wasn’t sure if he has the inside level to convince the national team leadership at this point.
– Up here very good results are required, and most probably so good that I still don’t have them within my reach. It’s about this year’s World Cup, so it’s probably too early, Sundby told Nettavisen.
However, that he would finish in 40th place, 2 minutes and 19 seconds behind the winner Mikael Gunnulfsen, there were probably few who had thought about it beforehand.
NRK commentator Jann Post was not impressed.
– This was a disaster. Whether it’s skiing, form, or a combination, we may get the answer tomorrow, when I get another chance to skate 15 kilometers. This was a weak version of Martin Johnsrud Sundby, Post concluded.

Trapped in the stadium
What caused the crash in Saturday’s race is currently uncertain.
It was during the race very demanding wind and snow conditions, but Sundby left almost at the same time
Sundby wasn’t interested in speaking to the press after the race and quickly went through the interview zone.
Sundby didn’t spend long at the ski stadium before leaving the area. The online newspaper tried to get a comment from Røa’s runner as he left the stadium, but did not respond.

Nossum does not rule out a chat
Eirik Myhr Nossum is the man to convince if Sundby wants to get a place on the World Cup squad for Ruka.
Nossum has already made it clear that the two vacancies are reserved for national team riders and is still clear on that.

However, the coach of the national team recorded that he in no way followed Sundby’s path on Saturday.
– It was a little below average and a bit disappointing for him, but I haven’t spoken to him, says Nossum.
Understand that Sundby decided not to speak to the press after the race.
– I think mainly about sports, but breathing with my stomach sometimes, when you are really dissatisfied, can make sense, says Nossum.
The coach of the selection does not rule out that he will have a talk with Sundby after the disappointment.
But already on Sunday, Sundby has a chance to fight back hard when he’s ready for 15 kilometers of free technique in Beitostølen.
