Many Northern Lights waiting

If you live in southern Norway, you may be lucky to see the Northern Lights in the next few days.

According to SpaceWeather, there will be more geomagnetic storms in the coming days, with solar winds of up to 600 kilometers per hour.

This means that the Northern Lights can reach so far south that both Easterners and the people of Bergen can see it.

The reason for these geomagnetic storms and solar winds is, according to Pål Brekke, head of space research at the Norwegian Space Center, a large corona hole.

– Corona holes are dark areas in the sun’s warm atmosphere. There, the solar wind “squirts out” at twice the speed of the rest of the solar disk. When those holes rotate toward the center of the sun, the hole “points” toward us, Brekke tells Dagbladet.

These solar winds that come towards the earth, lead to the northern lights over our country.

According to TV 2’s Northern Lights map, at the time of writing you should be able to see the Northern Lights as far south as Kristiansand.

Normally, the Northern Lights are green, but yesterday, the lucky residents of Tromsø were able to see pink lights dancing wildly in the sky, according to SpaceWeather.

For the Northern Lights to turn pink, particles from space must sink lower than normal into Earth’s atmosphere. The green colors come from electrons colliding with oxygen atoms about 100 to 200 kilometers above the earth’s surface.

When electrons go lower and collide with nitrogen molecules, the northern lights can turn pink.
