The former United captain says he struggled to keep his mind at rest when the Uruguayan began to stretch his lips:

After the match, he should have been so angry that United coach Sir Alex Ferguson took notice. Evra says that David de Gea had also heard Suárez’s racist statement in Spanish, and that they raised it with Judge André Marriner.

Then it appeared in the newspapers. Then a sea of ​​messages arose from Liverpool supporters:

– Manchester United received so many threat letters. People wrote: “We are in prison and we are Liverpool fans. When we release him, we will kill you and your family,” says Evra, who further explains that he had security personnel around him 24 hours a day for two months.

He says that when Suárez was questioned by the FA, a version emerged that Evra felt did not coincide with reality:

– When we were in an audience, Luis Suárez lied, saying that he had called me “black” and that it means “friend”. I said, “That’s not my name. My mother gave me a name, not a color,” says Evra.

In some parts of South America, it is true that the term “black” has several meanings, in some of them, in the proper context, it can be used with love. The Frenchman emphasizes that he knows it, but that it soon became known that Suarez had been anything but pleasant.

“In the end, he admitted everything, was suspended in eight games and received a large fine (£ 40,000, ed.),” Says Evra.

– I will never call him racist

After the verdict ended, Liverpool, then coached by Sir Kenny Dalglish, chose to warm up for a game away from home against Wigan in shirts with a picture of Suarez and his suit number.

This caused Evra to absolutely turn on all the plugs.

– All the players wore jerseys with a statement of support for Suarez. He had been banned for racism, he had been fined, but he still supported him in this way. He was so frustrated and cursed, Evra explains.

That event became a major theme during the Sky Sports studio broadcast in October 2019, eight years after the event, in which Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher, who was among the players wearing the Suarez jersey, was Evra’s lament:

– There is no doubt that we made a big mistake. That was obvious, says Carragher, who believes he hadn’t heard of the invention until they were in the locker room.

– I don’t know who was behind. It may have been the players who were close to Luis in the locker room. I may not dare say I didn’t want to wear that shirt, Carragher explained.

– I just regret it, we were wrong.

Although Evra is clear that he had difficulties following Suárez’s case, and that he was attacked by his followers for having done something wrong, it is not Suárez’s fault.

Among other things, the two should have had a pleasant pass before the 2015 Champions League final, where Evras Juventus lost to Suarez and Barcelona.

– I will never call Suarez a racist, because I don’t know him personally. I forgive him very quickly, but I do not understand that a victim should hear from the media or others that “one must stop and laugh.” I don’t cry, I don’t have to cry.

Evra left her shoes on the shelf in July 2019 after a stay with West Ham. He played for Manchester United from 2006 to 2014, winning five Premier League titles and one Champions League title.
