The day a year after he began his path to World Cup gold in rapid chess, Carlsen began his quest for victory in his own Christmas space tournament.
The start has not yet been the best for the Norwegian. He was clearly the best in the first game, but he missed the win. The day ended like this with four draws.
– In general, I am satisfied that I was not in danger of losing. Four draws is not very good, but there is a lot of time to do it here. “I can only hope to be even more in the cut tomorrow and Monday,” Carlsen tells NRK.

Overlooking the opponent’s mistake
He got a head start in the game against Aronjan, and at first the arrow showed a farmer in favor of Carlsen.
Despite the computer showing Carlsen’s advantage, the Norwegian got into trouble after 30 minutes. He had less than a minute left on the clock then, and he couldn’t take advantage of the board.
Carlsen recognized that a farmer won once again, and invited him to barter. And at that moment Aronjan made a big mistake by moving his rook to d4. Carlsen could play a farmer and say chess, and thus win a rook later. The Norwegian ignored this.
After Aronjan moved his rook to D4, Carlsen was able to play his pawn to F4. By then, Aronjan was under control. Carlsen could then win the tower found in H3.
– It happened a bit out of nowhere. So you don’t think there could be such a colossal mistake, says Torstein Bae.
After 61 moves, only the kings remained on the board and the game ended in a draw.
– At least I got a very good position in the first game, I’ll take it. I have faith in a better day tomorrow. It’s too early to start not being in a good mood, Carlsen smiles.
Fought for victory in the third game
In Game 2 on Saturday, Carlsen faced Wesley So. It ended in a relatively quick draw.
In today’s third game, it was exciting again. Carlsen was a peasant in much of the party, but he had much more active parts.
Carlsen got the pawn back, but couldn’t find the moves that ensured victory in the match. The fourth game of the day also ended in a draw.
– Nothing happened at my black parties. It was just a draw with which it was not so easy to do anything. The bad was my first party. It was very disappointing not to get any more out of that, sums up Carlsen.
Thus, Carlsen has two points after four games today. Group play continues on Sunday. Also then, four games are played, before three games are played on Monday. The top eight players from the first three days advance to the playoffs that begin Tuesday.
