Liverpool 2-1 West Ham

The Reds came to the home game against West Ham knowing they could do something that only one edition of Liverpool has accomplished before them.

From 1978 to 1981, Liverpool played 63 league games in a row at Anfield without losing. At the time, legend Bob Paisley was Liverpool’s manager.

After 51 wins and 11 draws, it seemed for a long time that game number 63 in the series would end in a draw. Two substitutes wanted him differently.

Five minutes before the end, Xherdan Shaqiri threw a brilliant pass to Diogo Jota. Alone with the goalkeeper, the Portuguese put the cash ball into the goal.

– That score means a lot. When I watch games from the bench, I always think about what I can do to change things. Luckily I have room to play on my butt. It was a great pass from “Shaq,” Jota told Sky Sports.

Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp was also happy after the triple.

– We do everything possible to win matches. It’s not about shining or flying, but about working hard. It is absolutely necessary against teams like this, Klopp told the BBC.

No one has let in more

Once again, Liverpool came into a game with a new constellation in central defense. With Virgil van Dijk, Joël Matip and, most recently, Fabinho on the disabled list, Jürgen Klopp doesn’t have many left to take off.

The choice fell on Nathaniel Phillips. The 23-year-old spent last season on second-tier loan in Germany. In addition to his stay in Stuttgart, he managed to make his debut for Liverpool in the FA Cup.

The home team’s defense got into trouble early on. Ten minutes into the game, Joe Gomez slipped and slid on the wet grass. Gomez headed the ball directly to Pablo Fornals. The Spaniard lowered it to his chest before placing the ball in the nearest corner behind Alisson.

The guest goal was Liverpool’s 15th Premier League setback this season. At the time of writing, no team has conceded more than the reigning league champions.

Penalty kick

Liverpool took the time to play their way into the match. The home team’s first goal came midway through the first half at Anfield.

Sadio Mané came close to extending the visitors’ lead when he found himself completely unmarked in front of the goal after a pass down the middle, but he lifted the ball over Aaron Cresswell and was a little too high and hit the crossbar. After a brief fight with the defender, Jordan Henderson finally got the ball home. The Liverpool captain squeezed the ball, but the shot went wide.

Six minutes before the break, the hosts received a penalty. Curtis Jones sent the ball into Mohamed Salah’s box. He kept up with a soft silky padding before Masuaku kicked him in the heel. The Egyptian went theatrically past, but referee Kevin Friend was still right in pointing out the penalty spot.

From eleven meters, Salah was not wrong. The 28-year-old put the penalty in the center of the goal, while Lukasz Fabianski lunged to his left. It was Salah’s seventh penalty goal against West Ham in as many attempts.

Score canceled

Guests from East London got off to a good start even after the break.

Fornals could have scored two goals when he got the chance five minutes after the inning, but he couldn’t control Masuaku’s post on Alisson.

Halfway through the inning, Fornals got the chance again, but then it was Andy Robertson who was in the right place at the right time and blocked the end.

The fourth before the end, substitute Diogo Jota thought he had decided the match. Fabianski saved Mané’s shot, but had to return. A duel between the goalkeeper, Mané and Angelo Ogbonna, resulted in the ball ending up in Jota, who put it on goal at close range.

The jubilation was both low-key and brief. The video judge told Judge Friend to take a closer look at the situation. Television footage showed Mané only hitting the West Ham goalkeeper before the ball ended up with Jota. Therefore, the scoring was canceled.

The alternates combined

Five minutes before the end, Jota put the ball back into the goal. This time, there was nothing wrong with online knowledge. On the contrary.

It was another substitute, Xherdan Shaqiri, who found the Portuguese newcomer with a brilliant breaking pass. Alone with Fabianski, the 23-year-old put the cash ball into the nearest corner.

West Ham never managed to respond. Liverpool thus occupy the top of the table, three points ahead of the city’s rival, Everton. The Blues face Newcastle on Sunday.
