It was the Norwegian Football Association that took the initiative to terminate Lars Lagerbäck’s contract early, the Swede said in a press release.

– After a conversation and a request from the NFF, Terje Svendsen and Pål Bjerketvedt, the undersigned will step down as coach of the national team, says Lagerbäck and continues:

– The reason for this is that our contract with mutual possibility of termination even extends to a possible World Cup final. Now, the NFF will have in place a “long-term solution” with future World Cup qualification and subsequent European Championship qualification in mind.

He says that 2020 was not a successful year in terms of results and achievements. He says they couldn’t be the best when it comes to, and that two canceled games plus the pandemic didn’t give them a chance to win the Nations League. “That’s football sometimes,” Lagerbäck writes.

– It is always sad to leave a team that you have worked with for many years. Among other things, considering our support staff who have contributed in a very good way to our achievements and have shown great loyalty on and off the field. In addition, the group of players, with some exceptions in all respects, has shown a professional attitude and has made a great effort of work.

It is also stated in the press release that it is the undersigned who are leaving the national team. It is signed by both Lagerbäck and his assistant Per Joar Hansen.

Lagerbäck concludes his press release with the following cryptic message:

“Finally, remember why you win soccer games …”

Lars Lagerbäck and Per Joar Hansen have not responded to VG’s inquiries.
