Archaeologists have made a great discovery in Egypt. Twelve meters underground, they found three burial chambers with 100 intact sarcophagi.
The colorful closed sarcophagi were buried around 2,500 years ago. Some of them contained mummies wrapped in clothing, reports the AP news agency.
The finds were made in burial chambers forty feet underground at Saqqara, located a few miles southeast of Cairo’s famous Giza pyramids.
Archaeologists opened a sarcophagus containing a well-preserved mummy in front of an audience at Saturday’s press conference.
The mummy was later radiographed.

Announces new discoveries
The sarcophagi and statues come from the Ptolemaic dynasty (ca. 320-30 BC) and the era of the Senate (664-332 BC), Egypt’s Minister of Tourism declared at the press conference, Khaled el-Anany.
– We will announce new discoveries of Saqqara later this year, says the Minister of Tourism, according to AP.

Throughout the fall, archaeologists have made great discoveries in Egypt. Since September, at least 140 sarcophagi have been found in the Saqqara area, most of them containing mummies.

Full graves
– We have found other burial chambers full of sarcophagi that are well preserved. Golden, colorful and decorated, the secretary general of the National Council of Antiquities, Mostafa Waziri, revealed to journalists at the press conference.
Archaeologists have also found some 40 statues of gods in the tombs of Saqqara.
The finds are scheduled for display at the next Grand Museum, which is under construction near the pyramids of Giza in Cairo.
