It is possible that the former coach of the Norwegian team will return to one of his former employers.
Lars Lagerbäck was fired by the Norwegian Football Association earlier this month, after a failed attempt to qualify Norway for the European Football Championship in 2021.
In Iceland, however, no one has forgotten what Lagerbäck did for the country’s soccer pride during the 2016 European Championship.

Arnar Vidarsson was recently hired as coach of the Icelandic national team, with Eidur Gudjohnsen as an assistant. However, at a press conference on Tuesday, Vidarsson says Lagerbäck may also be part of the technical team.
– We talked to Lars. We would be very happy if we had Lars in the World Cup qualifiers. It’s simply because Lars has enormous experience and quality as a coach. We believe it can strengthen the whole environment around our national team, says Vidarsson according to the Icelandic Fotbolti.net.
However, Vidarsson understands that Lagerbäck may need time, after he recently had to resign from his job as coach of Norway.
– We understand very well if you are not ready to launch a full-time project with us as you are today. We have talked about meeting Lars after the New Year. Either in Iceland or that we go to him. Then we’ll make a plan and hopefully Lars will get into this with us.
Heimir Halgrimsson, who led the Icelandic team together with Lagerbäck between 2013 and 2016, even led Iceland to the 2018 World Cup.
His successor Erik Hamrén failed to qualify the team for the 2021 European Championship, when there was a loss to Hungary in the playoffs.
In early December, Swedish Expressen wrote that Lars Lagerbäck had refused to become a coach for the United Arab Emirates.
