Scott MacFarlane, NBC reporter has shared a document showing that Keller has been charged with various crimes by the grand jury.
The former swimmer was identified in a video from inside the Congress building. The 38-year-old wore a US national team jacket during the riots and is now at risk of conviction on multiple charges.
According to the Washington Post, the jacket must have been one of the reasons that old teammates, coaches and other support personnel have easily identified Keller.
A united Congress had to flee and there was total chaos in Washington DC last Wednesday. Several Donald Trump supporters stormed Congress, turning the ceremonial session into bloody and life-threatening riots. A total of five people died after the riots.
Trump supporter
Keller is said to have become increasingly interested in politics in recent years, but he has not been radical. At the same time, he was increasingly supporting Donald Trump on social media.
The video shows what Keller is supposed to be with his back turned to a group of police officers trying to control the protesters.
“We were not aware of this and cannot confirm whether it is correct,” a spokesman for the American Swimming Federation told the Washington Post.
Five medals
Keller has deleted all of his social media accounts. There he is said to have shared a great deal of Trump-friendly content.
The Olympic champion has not commented on his alleged involvement during the riots and has not been available for comment in recent days.
Klate Keller won five Olympic medals in a total of three games. Among other things, he gold during the Sydney 2000 Olympics and in Athens four years later.
The swimmer has previously said that he has struggled to come back to life after his career and has long been a known Trump supporter.
Broken by divorce
In an interview with Usaswimming in 2018, Keller said he was left unemployed and homeless after his divorce from his wife in 2014. The 38-year-old must have lived in a car.
He lost his job as a salesman within 24 hours. He lost several jobs in total and was unable to afford a place to live, while also paying support for his three children. He got so far that he slept in his car for ten months.
– I found the pressure in the real world much scarier and much more difficult to cope with because I went from swimming to having three children and a wife in one year, so the consequence of not achieving success became very, very real I don’t a sale or the boss got mad at me or i got fired – ah shit, you don’t have health insurance. It’s very concrete, and a lot of people trust you, Keller said on an Olympic podcast.
He was unprepared for normal A4 life after finishing his career.
– When I failed, I felt a feeling of pain, frustration and depression much stronger than with swimming. In swimming, it was just me. All the years that I experienced success with swimming gave me the wrong expectations of the world, making it much harder to cope with the little setbacks I experienced on a daily basis, according to Keller.
