Keep the Oslo campaign – I woke up to this

Last night, several posters appeared on the walls and shop windows of the main Grünerløkka street in the Oslo district, the Thorvald Meyers gate.

The main message is clear: Small independent businesses, stages, bars, restaurants, and stores are struggling. Take care of them.

By using the logos of the giants in restaurants, kiosks, stores and clothing chains, the people behind the Keep Oslo campaign want to remind the public what they risk losing if they do not support the little players, and not least to who is ready to move. Hostal.

– Lack of support

One of the owners of the popular Bass restaurant, Thorstein Eek, was one of those who woke up to posters in his own window. Think of the trick as a positive surprise.

– Precisely because gentrification eats up Grünerløkka, and that is not positive, he tells Dagbladet and continues:

The half hour check on winter blues

– The campaign is probably the result of the fact that those who live here have been feeling strongly about a feeling of lack of support lately. Many have been ruined.

Local enthusiasts

One of the initiators of Behold Oslo is Sollin Sæle. He spent much of the night until Tuesday on campaigning activities, he says. The activist won’t just take credit for the invention.

They want to get people involved and create debate, before it’s too late, he says.

– We are several local residents in their 20s who care about our city. We believe that everything becomes more and more similar, anonymous and boring. We know that a lot of people use the small stores in the area, but when the stores crack due to the pandemic, they don’t have the same backing as the big chains, Sæle tells Dagbladet, continuing:

– And we know that the big chains are in line to establish themselves here. We must avoid that. We are not mad at chains and we like to use them, but when there are too many branches in the city, it is not very positive. So we’ll show you how you can end up looking here.

– It seems dark

It’s also no secret that last year’s excavation work and the complete renovation of the Thorvald Meyers gate, with new trolley rails and sidewalks, has hit many businesses in the area hard, reports Bass owner Torstein Eek.

The compensation scheme for companies affected by the corona measures is calculated on the basis of last year’s turnover. It hits Bass and many businesses in the area hard. Many clients disappeared during the street rehabilitation.

– When the consequences of the pandemic are added, it looks dark. Many small businesses are not strong enough to take on the deficit and will not be able to afford to start over once this is over. We miss something tangible to work for. Six months, two months, or three gives us something to relate to, Eek says.

In Olaf Rye Square you will find the Futur clothing store. The owners say they were surprised when they opened the store Tuesday and saw the signs.

– There was a letter some time ago where they informed us that something was happening, but that this happened last night we did not know. It’s only positive, says store owner Eleonora Si-Lang.

– Those behind the campaign are making a good effort. It’s important for people to become more aware and good at providing support in a difficult time for many, says store owner Thomas Angell.

– Hedge funds are ready

It is mobilized from various fields within the nightlife in the «loop». Parkteatret concert stage general manager Dan-Michael Danino wrote a very bitter post on VG today. With a sarcastic pen, braid the Ministry of Commerce and Industry’s handling of small businesses during the pandemic.

He also believes that the future is dark for many business owners and employees in the area.

Fortunately, there are hedge funds and chains ready to take over all the stores that will soon be empty. It has already started at Thorvald Meyers Gate; a long list of nondescript generic chain stores has come in the wake of the closure, writes Danino.

– They appreciate and praise the financial muscle for defining itself as what the government considers sustainable and, fortunately, they only have the end result as passion, he continues.
