Zhang Zhan, 37, was sentenced in a short court hearing in Shanghai, nearly a year after the virus outbreak in Wuhan began.

She was accused of inciting conflict and causing trouble in the chaotic first phase of the outbreak.

His direct reports of overcrowded crematories and hospitals were widely shared on social media in February, drawing the attention of authorities.

In an article, he wrote that the authorities did not give people enough information and then simply closed the city.

One of its defenders, Ren Quanniu, reports the verdict.

First against journalist

To date, Chinese authorities have punished nine whistleblowers in an attempt to avoid criticism of the authorities’ handling of the outbreak.

But the case is the first against a journalist. Three others: Chen Qiushi, Fang Bin and Li Zehua, who reported from Wuhan, have been missing since February.

China has received harsh criticism for handling the virus outbreak and is accused of secrecy, but is now trying to present the handling in a better light.

The trial took place just weeks before a team of experts from the World Health Organization (WHO) arrived in China to investigate how the virus originated.
