- Manchester United – RB Leipzig, at 9:00 p.m.
Usually he travels from stadium to stadium in the Champions League. But also for Jan Åge Fjørtoft (53) and V sport (formerly Viasport) the crown has hit hard.
– Now we do everything on Skype. On Tuesday I had Ole Gunnar Solskjær (Manchester United) and Julian Nagelsmann (RB Leipzig) on Skype. This is how we work now in the near future.
– How long will it be like this?
– I have no idea. You can almost take that with the government and those who make that kind of scheme, says Fjørtoft, referring to quarantine rules.
– You just have to comply with the rules. We do this to the letter, says Fjørtoft.
– I went out last week (in Rome and Amsterdam). Thereafter, infection control rules with testing and quarantine were followed. But now that everything has been sharpened, we look at it and stay home now, it says “Mr. Champions League “.
The world’s most generous club tournament is played entirely in Europe and spreads across television screens. At 9pm tonight, he’s ready for a treat seen through Norwegian eyes, Manchester United versus RB Leipzig. It’s Ole Gunnar Solskjær against Alexander Sørloth.
This game is also going through empty stands at Old Trafford. And so it will be for the foreseeable future.
– It’s sad, says Fjørtoft.
– The first game in which I was with empty stands was Paris Saint-Germain against Borussia Dortmund (March 11). I was almost surprised that it was possible. So I have to say that the infection control regime in stadiums makes me a bit proud on behalf of football.
– Last week I was in both Rome (Lazio – Borussia Dortmund) and Amsterdam (Ajax – Liverpool). I was impressed with the way they adhered to the strict rules. I also said that on the broadcast last week. It’s almost unreal to get to the stadiums.
Ghost fights or not: Interest in the Champions League remains huge in Norway and the rest of Europe.
Unfortunately, Norway haven’t had a team in the group stage since 2007 (Rosenborg). But that does not mean that we have not had Norwegian players. On Wednesday, there will even be two at Old Trafford, with Solskjær and Sørloth.
When Dagbladet talks to Fjørtoft, he has just “skypeed” coaches Solskjær and Nagelsmann.
– Nagelsmann talks about Sørloth and the role of Sørloth, Fjørtoft reveals about the interview that will be shown before the game tonight
– With Norwegian eyes, it will be a very exciting match. I think there are two teams that get along.
Both teams won their first group matches against Paris Saint-Germain and Istanbul Basaksehir respectively.
In the Premier League, Manchester United are in 15th place. RB Leipzig leads the Bundesliga.
– There are two managers who are quite similar in mind. They are positive. They want to get on the field and have a good fight. It is always exciting to see Nagelsmann. He is a coach who will be relevant to all clubs in England when they need a coach, believes Fjørtoft.
The German is only 33 years old and has long been one of the greatest coaching talents in Europe. Came from Hoffenheim in 2019.
– Two years ago he said no to Real Madrid. This is a man who is mentioned everywhere. I know him quite well, because his boss in Hoffenheim, Alexander Rosen, is a good friend of mine. When Nagelsmann was a junior coach at Hoffenheim, he said: “You won’t believe the fantastic talent we have at the club.” At the time, Nagelsmann was between 26 and 27 years old.
– How do you rate the start of the season for Solskjær and Manchester United?
– It’s a bit like when I was a player: whenever United needed a goal, it would appear somewhere and score. He has brought some of the same to his coaching career. It works that way when you see it from the outside. When you need a win, you win. So it was in Paris when he got a contract with the club. And we saw it after the tennis result against Tottenham (1-6 at Old Trafford). I think United’s season has started quite well over time. But the first two or three games weren’t good.
– What will be important so that there is still positivity around him and the club?
– He wonders what parameters United has. When I played for England and Ole Gunnar was at United, second place was considered a failed season. But now United have a different starting point. Last year he was third, placed in the Champions League and semi-final of the Europa League. Fans are always waiting for you to take the next step. No one knows this as well as Ole Gunnar. After all, he was there when United were super good.
Solskjær himself says the team wants to fight for a title this season. RB Leipzig will be a solid test. The Germans reached the semi-finals of the Champions League last season. There, Paris Saint-Germain became too strong.
Germany: – Scandal
– In a group match with four teams, you would think ten points are needed to advance, says Solskjær.
– Reaching ten points as fast as possible is the goal. So our focus is on three points, he says.
