After a true electoral thriller, it became official: Joe Biden won the presidential election. The future president of the United States arrived in family style trotting to the stage in Wilmington, Delaware, to give his speech of appreciation on Sunday night Norwegian time.
– The people of this nation have spoken. They have given us a clear victory. A resounding victory. A victory for the people. We have won with the most votes in history, he said to great applause from the audience.
Will bring people together
– I must admit, this has surprised me tonight: we see it all over the nation, all over the world. A wave of joy, hope, renewed faith that tomorrow will bring a better day. I am humbled by the trust you give me.
Biden said he wants to be a president who wants to bring people together, not create division.
– I do not see red states and blue states, only the United States of America.
He hopes to win the trust of the entire American people, saying he ran for election to “restore the soul of America and the backbone of the nation, the middle class.”
– And make the United States once again respected throughout the world.
He thanked his wife Jill, the children, the grandchildren and the rest of the family.
– Jill is going to be a great first lady, I am very proud of her.
Homage to Harris
“I have the honor to serve with a wonderful vice president,” said Biden.
With the electoral victory, Harris historically becomes the first woman and the first vice president of color in the United States.
– Don’t tell me it’s not possible in the United States. It’s time, Biden said of his historic vice president.
He took advantage of a good part of the speech to thank everyone, from the family to all the volunteers of the electoral campaign and all those who supported him.
– I owe you everything.
– Understand disappointment
On Friday, Decision Desk HQ declared Joe Biden’s victory in Pennsylvania, and thus also victory in the presidential election.
But several other outlets waited while votes were still being counted in important tip states. But on Saturday afternoon, NBC, AP, Fox News and CNN are following Dagbladet’s data provider and naming Joe Biden as the next American president.
President Donald Trump has yet to acknowledge the loss and has filed several lawsuits to retain his White House seat.
– For those of you who voted for President Trump. I understand the disappointment tonight. I’ve lost a couple of times myself, but now let’s give ourselves a chance, Biden said.
– It is time to put aside the harsh rhetoric, lower the temperature and see each other again, hear each other again, move on. We must stop treating our opponents as enemies. They are not our enemies. They are Americans, he said.
He further said that “this is the time to heal.”
A central theme in Biden’s speech was expected to be unity. President Donald Trump has been accused of dividing the nation, and there is no question that Biden will assume leadership of a deeply divided country.
Coronagruppe
“Folks, our job begins with controlling Covid,” Biden said.
Biden then announced the creation of a task force to deal with the escalating crown crisis in the United States.
The group will be appointed on Monday and will be the first concrete initiative that Biden takes after the US media named him the next US president.
CNN writes that it will be led by former US public health director Vivek Murthy, former FDA director David Kessler, and Yale University’s Dr. Marcella Nunez-Smith.
Played the Kygo song
– I’m a proud democrat. But I want to rule as American president. Our work is hard. For those who did not vote for me and those who did: May the beginning of the end of this grim age of demonization in America take place here and now.
– If we can decide not to cooperate, we can also decide to cooperate, Biden continued.
He ended the speech by quoting his grandparents:
– As my grandfather used to say: “Joey, keep the faith” and grandmother said “no, spread the word.”
With the song “Higher Love” by Kygo and Whitney Houston, the rest of their family, with children and grandchildren, and the Harris family took the stage. Together they watched the fireworks, with Coldplay in the background. This was the favorite band of Biden’s late son Beau.
– America’s soul was at stake
It was future Vice President Kamala Harris who introduced Biden.
“Protecting democracy requires sacrifice, but it is also a pleasure, because we, as a people, can build a better future,” Harris said to loud applause from those present, who hooted with car horns and waved flags and banners.
He thanked the campaign workers and everyone who worked to count the votes and, of course, everyone who voted.
– When the soul of the United States was at stake, you lined up.
She also thanked her husband Doug and the rest of the family.
– I love you more than I can express.
Harris also thanked Biden for being brave enough to elect a woman to run for vice president.
– I am the first woman chosen for this position, but I do not want to be the last.
