Alexander Stöckl (46) was affected by the fall of Daniel André Tande (26). He ended up sending Johann André Forfang (25) prematurely out of the barrier.
The show jumping competition at Ruka in Finland started out spectacularly. Tande was the second to jump, and the 26-year-old did very badly.
Tande landed, but crashed quickly to the ground as the skis collided with each other. The Norwegian jumper was first pulled off the ground on a sled and then loaded onto an ambulance.
An hour later, however, upright and cheerful Tande posed for an interview with NRK.
– I got pretty nervous, because it hurt. He was afraid it was now another six months. It had usually been my luck. But luckily it’s just a real shove, and a yellow and blue body, says Tande, who doesn’t rule out he may line up in Sunday’s race “after a good round in the sauna.”
Tandes’ downfall, however, seemed dramatic at first and came very close to the national team coach Alexander Stöckl.
An influential Austrian was going to send new Norwegian jumpers off the barrier at Ruka, but couldn’t stay focused. In the end, Johann André Forfang was sent off. Thus he became a discus and was not allowed to skip the second round.
– It was a bit too much at this point. What happened to Tande, and yes. My thoughts were already on the hospital. I couldn’t keep my concentration. I waved as the clock ticked 15 seconds. Then it usually turns green, but then I see that it is still yellow when going downhill, Stöckl tells NRK.
– I just have to apologize. I made a mistake. It is worse for the athlete who cannot jump again, says a clearly affected coach.

Forfang was cursed in the interview after the jump, who had no idea what had gone wrong.
– It’s pretty amazing. Damn for not believing. Sorry, but he’s completely sick, the jumper thundered to NRK.
Forfang says he followed coach Alexander Stöckl and not the traffic light.
– It’s incredible that something like this could happen. I was left as a question mark when the speaker said they had dismissed me, he says.
The best Norwegian in Ruka was Halvor Egner Granerud in fourth place. Two places behind followed Robert Johansson. The race was won by a great Markus Eisenbichler. Poles Piotr Zyla and Dawid Kubacki took the rest of the podium.
Granerud’s skis slid off the landing in the second half, which may have cost him several points.
– I’m very disappointed. It won’t do it at all. I land like a sheep, Granerud describes to NRK.
