BUENOS AIRES / OSLO (VG) The doctor who is being investigated for the negligent homicide of Diego Maradona believes he is innocent.

On Sunday, it was announced that an investigation into the death of soccer legend Diego Maradona was opened.

His doctor, Leopoldo Luque, is under investigation for negligent homicide and for rendering Maradona defenseless.

Maradona’s daughters requested an examination of the medication administered by Luque and his “team” in recent months during treatment at the Ipensa, La Plata and Olivos clinics.

According to Clarín, the autopsy should not have revealed negligence, but the prosecution will still investigate whether medical negligence is behind the death.

VG was in his place when Luque gave a press conference on Sunday. The doctor seemed clearly involved in the events of the past week, but is strong in his voice.

Diego was tired, he was tired of being Maradona. He was rebellious and independent, and lived as he wanted, says a frank and inclusive Luque.

– I am not responsible for his death

– We were a very big team that did what we could for Diego. He was a person who did not like doctors or psychologists.

– Why wasn’t he at the hospital?

– I did not want it. We had no basis to be able to make them admit it, and we couldn’t admit it by force. It wasn’t an object, says Luque.

He is aware that it is useless to seek and distribute blame for Maradona’s death.

– All tests were good, nothing could be seen. He died of natural causes. He has lived a life and died for many different things.

– Do you feel responsible for what happened?

– I was responsible for taking care of him, being with him and helping him. He was my friend and we were very close. I am not responsible for his death, he says and sheds a tear.

Argentina’s largest newspaper: Maradona’s doctor is investigated for negligent homicide

– was a human being

Maradona’s lawyer, Matías Morla, arrived earlier this week with a statement regarding the death of the client and the friend. There he demanded an investigation into Maradona’s death.

– The ambulance took more than half an hour to arrive. This is criminal idiocy. This fact cannot be overlooked, and I would ask for it to be investigated, it says in a statement.

When asked why there wasn’t an ambulance ready outside Maradona’s home, Luque says they couldn’t take such action without the soccer legend wanting it.

It also goes into detail about what happened when Maradona was found dead:

– Someone from Maradona’s house called me and told me that he didn’t look good. Then I called an ambulance and asked them to send a helicopter, to send what they had to the house.

– Why no one in the house called an ambulance, I don’t know, he says.

Luque is clearly included in the conversation with the press. When he talks about how happy he was in Diego, tears come to him.

Had Maradona given up on life?

– No, but I was sad. We did the best we could for a complicated and sick patient who has been dying for 20 years.

Luque also claims that Maradona made it difficult for him to treat him. The soccer star had been admitted for treatment a few days earlier, but it was finally written down.

– We managed to convince him to stay in the clinic for a few more days, but we cannot stop him. It was not an object, it was a human being. They locked him in his room and took pills and alcohol.

He also said that it is the most common thing in the world to die of a heart attack.

– Diego was very sad. He was a person who lived a lonely life. I think he gave up the fight, says Luque.

Could not be admitted by force

There are several critical questions about the decisions that were made about Maradona’s health prior to his death.

– There was also talk of putting Maradona in a psychiatric clinic, but there was nothing in his medical history to suggest it could be done.

Why are the police investigating you?

– I don’t know, he was a friend and I’ll work with them. I don’t know what the research is based on, but I’ll find out soon.

– I’m not hiding anything, I did everything I could, I’m proud of the work I did. I’m really sorry, but I guarantee you I did the best I could.
