– We have to go up and down, and if the world needs something it is food. The coast in western Norway and Skipavika in Gulen are absolutely ideal for the production of edible fish on land, says Stein Inge Larsen, a board member of Sande Aqua, to NRK.
The new giant facility will be the platform for the production of more than 33,000 tonnes of live fish and will therefore be the largest land-based fish farm in the country. When completed, the plant will have a capacity of 67,000 tons.
The estimated price is more than NOK 5 billion, almost what the government will spend on corona measures next year.
– Spor skin set
– This will probably be the largest investment made in the former Sogn og Fjordane county in this decade. We have made good use of the waiting time and the vigil nets are over. After careful preparation, we have good control, assures the chairman of the board, Larsen.
Site work is underway in Gulen and Larsen is confident that they will be in the process of building the facility in August next year.
The plant will employ about 70 employees when operations are up and running.
– Therefore, the starting shot has been launched for a development that will leave its mark on Norwegian aquaculture history, says Larsen.
Cooperation with Denmark
Sande Aqua plans two rounds of capital raising before construction begins.
– We are a nation that relies on salmon and salmon farming, so this is the future. I am fully aware of that, says the chairman of the board.
The company is working closely with Billund Aquaculture in Denmark on the design of the equipment to be used in the new facility.
It means a lot to the municipality
Gulen Mayor Hallvard Oppedal is very pleased that Skipavika’s businessmen and industrial environment are investing so much.
– We are very happy when they tell us that they are going to invest so much in jobs here in the municipality.
Now he hopes the new jobs will lead to further relocation in the southern parts of the township.
– Important with new investments
– I think it’s great. One thing we really want is to start new investments and new jobs along the coast, Fisheries Minister Odd Emil Ingebrigtsen tells NRK.
According to the minister, interest in land agriculture has skyrocketed since 2016.
– The world needs seafood produced in Norway, both in water and on land, explains Ingebrigtsen.
It highlights how important it is to have new private workplaces at a demanding time regarding the crown situation.
