A video of a motorcyclist getting into a police car made the police even call for an investigation. The case has now been dropped by the Special Unit and the motorcyclist complains.
A video of a collision between the emergency police patrol and a motorcycle received strong reactions this summer.
The video appears to show that the patrol, following the motorcyclist, takes off from the road and drives right in front of the motorcycle. The motorcyclist immediately goes to the side of the car.
The collision occurred in Liertoppen this spring. Soon after, the video shows that the motorcyclist and the bicycle are on the road.
The reactions came after the video was posted, by Drammens Tidende, among others.
The UP head himself, Steven Hasseldal, took the case to the Bureau of Investigation and called for an investigation.
– I understand the audience’s reaction to the video, Hasseldal said.
The Office has now dropped the case, “on the position of evidence.”
The new video showed another version
VG has contacted the Bureau of Investigation, which has not commented on the case.
On their website, they write that another video, from the Norwegian Public Roads Administration, showed a completely different course of events than the video that was released.
“A video recording from the Norwegian Public Roads Administration illuminated the course of events in a good way. Here it emerged that [motorsyklisten] could not stop the motorcycle by police control.
According to the Bureau of Investigation, this video shows that the motorcyclist set the pace and, at the same time, changed direction. The police car was a few meters from the motorcycle, so the motorcyclist got directly into the car.
“There was no evidence in the case that the driver of the police patrol intentionally collided with the motorcycle, or that he understood or should have understood that the motorcycle was coming at high speed in the future.”
Complaints about closure
The motorcyclist has decided to appeal the decision, says his assistant attorney.
– We are already in the process of drafting the complaint, says attorney Lina K. Smorr in a text message to VG.
The Bureau of Investigation’s decision states that they believe the motorcyclist got into the police car.
– My client completely disagrees with that assessment. He is aware that it was the police car that hit him, after he set the speed to pass the police car in connection with a check, Smorr says.
The motorcyclist has admitted that he tried to flee from the UP patrol, after having driven too fast and without a driver’s license.
The lawyer says they have reviewed the evidence, all the videos and explanations of the case.
Emergency police have not commented on VG’s suspension.
