Handball, EC Handball | Handball girls thrive in the European Championship bubble

You’d think it might be boring isolated from the outside world, but surprisingly, there’s only one thing Camilla Herrem and Stine Bredal Oftedal say they miss, compared to normal championships.

KOLDING (Nettavisen): The European Women’s Handball Championship in 2020 will likely go down in the history books as the different championship, best remembered for the coronavirus, isolation, and empty stands.

In their apartment at the players hotel in Kolding, Norwegian players do their best to make time to spend with games, games and Christmas traditions between matches and training.

– Almost like in a regular championship

If one is to believe in Stine Bredal Oftedal and Camilla Herrem, it is not as bad as it seems to live in a separate bubble, isolated from the outside world. In fact, they believe that there is not much difference from how it usually is during other championships.

– We live in a bubble, and it is stricter than usual, but in a championship we do it more or less the same no matter what happens. We live quite isolated, but we try to have a little comfort. It is almost the wait for the championship that is worse. Once we have started, I think we will do well for the next 15 days, Bredal Oftedal tells Nettavisen.

Because there are 15 days left for the final and the bronze final to be played in Boxen in Herning. Camilla Herrem doesn’t think it will sound like a deterrent for long.

– It went very well. I thought maybe the nine days before the championship down here would be a bit slower, but it was great that we had both games against Denmark. Then you start and the days go by pretty quickly. We are used to this kind of bubble, and it is not the case that we are so far removed from before, Herrem tells Nettavisen.

Agreed on what they miss

However, not everything is as it used to be during the championships, and there is one thing they both miss: fresh air.

– I think perhaps the biggest difference is that we are not allowed to leave the hotel. You usually go for a walk if you need some air. These are the things I notice the most. And we always have to wait a little longer. We should not get ahead of things a little. Everything is very punctual, says Oftedal.

The captain of the national team has the support of Camilla Herrem.

– What I miss is that you can go for a walk, or stop by the store. The only air we have now is getting in and out of the bus, and then we go very slowly. You need air, smile the end.

If the impulse arises, the handball girls have the opportunity to book a bus, which takes them to a deserted place, where they can ventilate, without danger of meeting other people.

However, they have not yet seized that opportunity, but both Bredal Oftedal and Herrem are confident that it will be relevant during the championship.

German coach can handle the match

Before that time, already at 6.15pm on Saturday, however, the handball girls will face Germany, and captain Oftedal believes in a difficult match.

– They are big, strong, explosive and come with a lot of speed. It is a team that is quite good at many things. I’m very excited for that game, and there are points that are very important to us. Of course we want to win, but it requires more than in the previous match, says the captain of Norway.

Germany won their first match against Romania 22-19, without their crown-infected coach Henk Groener. The 60-year-old tested negative and got into the car on Friday afternoon for Kolding.
