– I really like to travel and fly, so I thought I would have to take the airplane seats and create my own travel experiences. Now I have nine airplane seats in the kitchen, says Gunnar Hunskaar (57) to Dagbladet.
When the corona pandemic struck in March, and there was a near total disruption to overseas travel, Gunnar was forced to retrieve used airplane seats from the Sandefjord garage.
It was TV2 who first mentioned the case.

Captain to Malaga
It all started with a themed party a couple of years ago. Gunnar purchased used airline seats for NOK 4,000, borrowed boarding passes and envelopes from Torp Sandefjord Airport, and mailed invitations to guests.
Along the driveway to the home, he installed LED lights to mimic a runway, turned the living room into an arrivals hall, and guests brought suitcases, passports, and Hawaiian shirts.
– When we were ready to board, I put the sound of a flight clock on YouTube in the background, he says.
With a microphone, Gunnar was captain and welcomed the travelers to the imaginary flight to Malaga.
Travel experiences on a Saturday night
When the yearning to travel grows bigger for the 57-year-old from Sandefjord, he likes to sit alone in an airplane seat in the kitchen. A serving cart with Coke, Brandy, and Pringles is also a must, and not long ago he spent several hours in the airplane seat.
– Then I sat down and had travel experiences on a quiet Saturday night, remember.
– How often do you fantasize in an airplane seat?
– Preferably once or twice a week, according to need and form. Sometimes I sit alone in the airplane seat, instead of watching TV, he says.
So far, he hasn’t had a problem for the 57-year-old having airplane seats in the Sandefjord kitchen, but for the other members of the household, he’s been a bit more demanding at times.
– I thought it was okay, but my daughter thinks it’s a bit annoying having to crawl through the kitchen to get to the oven, she says.
He describes himself as “an utterly mediocre man” and says it doesn’t have to be expensive to make your own kitchen cabin.
– I got twelve seats for 4000 crowns and Torp airport has been very helpful in providing me with brochures for the seats. I use white Kiwi napkins to cover the seats, get a speaker and microphone for 1500 kroner, and listen to the flight sounds from YouTube, says Hunskaar.
Good news for many
However, when air traffic begins to return to normal, Gunnar will make the trip to Greece or Austria, he says.
– I’m very fond of Rhodes, he says.
