Formula 1 driver Romain Grosjean (34) spoke from his hospital bed. He admits that a security bar he was standing against may have saved his life.

– Hello everyone, I just want to say that I’m fine, or pretty good at least, says the French-Swiss Grosjean in a video posted on his Instagram, which is also shared by him and the Haas team on Twitter.

It was during the first round of the Formula 1 race in Bahrain that things turned bad for the 34-year-old, who drives for the Haas team.

At a speed of 221 km / h, the car crashed on the railing, splitting in two and an explosive fire broke out. The images on television were very dramatic. It was almost half a minute before Grosjean, by his own legs, emerged from the burning hell and was treated by paramedics.

In 2018, he was one of many drivers who objected to the new cabin protection, the so-called halo. Now Grosjean thanks him for living.

– Without him, I wouldn’t have been able to talk to you today, he says in the video.

Halo is a kind of ring that is placed on cars to protect drivers’ heads against, for example, flying objects. There are many indications that it was Grosjean who protected him when he flew through the railing after the violent collision on the Bahrain runway.

– Thanks for all the messages. It wasn’t much of a halo when it arrived a few years ago, but now I think it’s the best Formula 1 has ever come up with. Without it I wouldn’t have been able to speak to you today. So I say thank you, is Grosjean’s message in the video.

– Personally, I think it’s sad for Formula 1 that it was introduced, said Grosjean himself when the halo was introduced. Their argument was that viewers can no longer see the drivers.

Video from the hospital shows that he has burns on both hands. He should also have burns on his ankles, but otherwise he’s fine under the circumstances. Among the safety rules of Formula 1 are fire retardant clothing and footwear.

According to a photo on Twitter, Grosjean has been visited by the president of the FIA, Jean Todt, in the hospital.

Team Principal Günther Steiner has also had contact with Grosjean. Steiner pronounces German Sky:

– He is conscious, he has control over things and he is doing well. He told me he was fine. I must say that he is positive and happy.

– We were lucky, Steiner himself says in a Haas press release.

– We are happy about all the safety improvements in modern Formula 1, to protect drivers. We send a thank you to the FIA security personnel and officers, who were there immediately to help Romain. Like I said, I think we were lucky, there is not much more to say about it. We hope that Romain will recover quickly from the injuries he has received.

Grosjean has been thoroughly checked and has no violations, according to an FIA press release.

At a press conference, Haas boss Steiner stated according to Aftonbladet:

– We had a turn, today a guardian angel stood on the field. I’ll visit him at the hospital on Monday and talk to the doctors, but if you want, I’d like to see you drive again next week.

There are two races remaining in this year’s Formula 1 season. Haas could possibly replace Grosjean with a substitute who can run in addition to Danish Kevin Magnussen.
