On Tuesday evening Norwegian time, US President Joe Biden delivered a speech in which he remembered the 500,000 Americans who lost their lives in connection with the corona pandemic in the United States.
From the rostrum, Biden said:
– There are more lives lost to this virus in the United States than in any other nation, said a clearly marked president, calling the bleak milestone “heartbreaking” and “bleak.”
The United States passed the grim crown milestone
– I ask all Americans to remember those we have lost and the grieving. I also ask that we remain vigilant, keep our distance between ourselves, wear bandages and say yes to the vaccine, he continued.
– I know how this is
To those who have lost someone during the pandemic, he said the following:
– They’ve never really left. They will always be part of your heart.
– I know how it is, he added, a clear reference to the tragedies that Biden has experienced.
The president lost his first wife and one-year-old daughter in a car accident in 1972. In 2015, his son Beau died of brain cancer.
In his speech, the president also called on the country to unite against the pandemic and stressed the importance of “fighting together.”
Following Biden’s speech, a minute’s silence was observed outside the White House. Also in attendance were First Lady Jill Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris and her husband Doug Emhoff.
Outside the White House, 500 candles were lit in memory of those who lost their lives.
Grim landmark
The United States reached another grim milestone Monday night. 500,000 people have lost their lives to the coronavirus, according to the Johns Hopkins University survey.
This is the highest number of corona deaths recorded in a country in the world. Biden has also ordered that it be signaled at half mast for the next five days.
