– Forget the white Christmas

Do you dream of a few inches of fresh white Christmas snow?

The state meteorologist Charalampos Sarchosidis at the Meteorological Institute is not a joy killer, but a realist, where he makes the prediction of this year’s Christmas dream:

Forget White Christmas until December 23 all along the coast and in the lowlands. A new and last opportunity arises on Christmas Eve. But it will probably only apply to inland areas of southern Norway, Sarchosidis tells Dagbladet.

The last chance for a white Christmas in the south comes with low pressure building up in Denmark on December 24 and moving rapidly north.

– Precipitation will come in the form of rain in Denmark. Here at home, it is the temperature that determines whether there will be snow on Christmas Eve. Over a long period, it will be mild until December, says Sarchosidis.

Northern lights and good weather

It has a rather unusual view from the window at Værvarslinga in northern Norway: Tromsø without snow a week and a half before Christmas.

– Will it be a white Christmas in Tromsø?

– No, there is nothing to point out now. But we have and will do it a lot in the future. By Sunday night at the latest, many were able to enjoy the Northern Lights, says the state meteorologist.

The statistics are a surefire way to confuse the state meteorologist with the Greek name and other Tromsø residents this Christmas.

Weather statistics for the past 30 years say there is a 90 percent chance of a White Christmas in Tromsø. The reality is closer to zero percent probability this time.

By far the most snow recorded in Norway by. Monday: 196 cm, county road 51, Valdresflye, Øystre Slidre.

The state meteorologist has an unusual temperature map in front of him for mid-December.

– Monday morning it was more degrees along the entire coast from the Swedish border to Hasvik in Hammerfest. Vestland and Møre og Romsdal have temperatures of +8. Only along the East Finnmark coast there are now lower degrees, reports Sarchosidis.

During this week, the “cold belt” along the coast expands towards Nordland.

Then something even more unusual happens over the next weekend. Southerly winds will create more degrees during the day along the coast in Finnmark and Troms as well.

By Christmas Eve, the entire Norwegian coastline, the second longest in the world, will have warm temperatures.

And there are 100,915 kilometers that include islands and bays. Only Canada has more coastline on the world map, twice as long.

Heat record

Before the temperature figures for December are ready, 2020 is expected to be the warmest year in Norway compared to the average for the 30-year period 1961-1990.

Before the final 2020 figures, 2014 is the warmest year in recent memory with 2.2 degrees above average. Before December 2020, it was 3.9 degrees above average, figures from the Meteorological Institute show.

– A clear trend so far in December is that northern Norway is warmer than usual at the moment, says the climate watch from Meteorological to Dagbladet.
