A new tourism collaboration targeting both Norwegians and international tourists is underway in Northern Norway.
With good traction aid from western Norway.
On Tuesday, it was announced that Flåm AS, one of Norway’s largest tourism players, will join as co-owner of Arctic Train.
Flåm AS is the company that operates Flåmsbana. The train route in western Norway is known as one of the world’s attractive destinations.
Arctic Train runs on the Ofot line north of Nordland, which is Norway’s northernmost railway. The collaboration means a lot to a tourism actor who made the maiden voyage on May 17 this year.
– This collaboration will be as spectacular as the experience on the ground.
This is what Karl Aksel Vik says, who until the new collaboration was chairman of the board of Arctic Train. He is now a member of the board.
– A beacon in northern Norway tourism.
Flåmsbana was described as the source of inspiration for Arctic Train when the latter announced that they would invest heavily in Northern Norway.
What the two have in common is that they are both considered one of the most beautiful train trips in Europe. Flåmsbana is even described as world class.
The difference between the two is that the latter is superior when it comes to experience, which is good for first-year students at Narvik.
– Being alone in a project of this type is demanding and we need someone who has traveled the path before us. Having Arctic Train and Flåm AS join forces to operate tourist trains on the Ofot line will be an exciting interaction, says Vik.
There is also optimism in the new partner organization.
CEO Solrun Hjelleflat says they have been in dialogue with Narvik about this for several years. She believes this means that they can eventually offer a year-round destination with the Arctic Train.
– There are great similarities between Flåm and Narvik, and we have analyzed whether the experiences we have had in Flåm can be copied in Narvik. Achieving this instead will be great for Norwegian tourism, says Hjelleflat.
She believes that such collaboration will be noticed internationally.
– This will strengthen Norwegian tourism. Norway is a small country, so joining forces and being able to offer two spectacular train experiences both along the fjords and in northern Norway will work well internationally.
– Puts Narvik on the map
Nordnorsk Reiseliv communications and marketing director Siw Sandvik believes this is good news for tourism.
– Flåm AS has been a success in a global context in western Norway. Such extensive collaboration with two spectacular train routes in Norway will be very positive for tourism in the north, he writes in an email to NRK.
She believes that Arctic Train will be able to change a lot, especially when it comes to learning and competition.
– This undoubtedly makes Narvik and Ofoten more accessible for Norwegians and international tourists.
