On Thursday, the leader of the Oslo city council, Raymond Johansen, announced that the municipality will continue with all measures against the spread of the infection. This after 80 new cases were registered in Oslo on Wednesday.
Johansen also said that he does not want to incentivize Oslo businesses to host Christmas dinners, while also warning Oslo citizens that the Christmas celebration may end this year.
Disagree
The group’s leader in Oslo Høyre, Øystein Sundelin, disagrees with Johansen.
– I also understand that this year there will be no Christmas table as we are used to having it. But I think maybe it was a little early to cancel the whole Christmas atmosphere in many workplaces. Because it is possible to have small lunches or dinners with colleagues, Sundelin tells Dagbladet.
He believes that we should be able to help the restaurant industry by allowing some parties and meals. Johansen has long boasted of the industry’s ability to comply with infection control rules.
– It will be a bit paradoxical. Every serious one can handle the infection control rules, and then it’s also possible to get a Christmas dinner.
Can smoke
Johansen referred to Prime Minister Erna Solberg’s remarks earlier this week, when she encouraged companies to host Christmas dinners. The city council leader went on to say that he did not believe the call could apply to Oslo as long as infection rates are as high as now.
Johansen also warned that the holiday celebration could be interrupted.
– In Oslo there are many, many who have relatives in other parts of the country. Students traveling home with mom and dad. Singles who have their family in another part of the country. Families who have an abiding Christmas tradition to celebrate in Lofoten, Stavern, or Steinkjer, Johansen said and continued:
– Remember the following: what you do in the weeks and months to come can determine if you can actually go home for Christmas. It can be quarantined just before departure. Sitting in the student dormitory during the holiday celebration can be the result of carelessness or bad luck.
Halloween festival
Johansen was also skeptical about Halloween parties. Health City Councilor Robert Steen explains to Dagbladet the City Council’s skepticism about such events.
– It is not certain that the traditional Christmas tables and the traditional Halloween celebrations fit perfectly with the rules of the crown that now must apply in Oslo. Especially when the level of infection is so high. It takes very little for you to become infected and become a carrier, and help turn this situation into a more serious situation, Steen tells Dagbladet.
