On Thursday night, NRK received confirmation from the company that they are halting the production of recycled metal in the industrial city.
– The jobs of some 36 Nyrstar employees working at the Høyanger plant will likely be affected by this decision. An employee consultation process can be carried out in collaboration with local unions, writes Nyrstar chief information officer Gytha Steenvoorden.
NRK knows that the employees were informed at a general meeting a few days ago and that the Høyanger municipality and business community have been informed.
Previously, the industrial municipality has been heavily affected by closures, among other things after the bankruptcy of the tire manufacturer Fundo. Later, more than 300 lost their jobs.
Accounting figures show that Nyrstar in Høyanger made a profit of more than 27 million in 2019 from a turnover of more than 103 million crowns.
Suspect in July
The union representative of the Nyrstar factory workers, Terje Ljotebø, thinks it is sad that they are now being fired.
– Not a good decision for us. We had a suspicion, we knew it could happen. But we waited for a long time that it didn’t happen, says Ljotebø.
The closure comes despite the fact that the factory has constantly seen new production records and has had a good and stable operation, also in the crown period.
Ljotebø said they were suspicious of Nyrstar’s cut plans in July.
– We were informed that we did not receive delivery of raw materials from Nyrstar in the Netherlands. After that, we have been waiting for this message to be received.
Hydro is today Høyanger’s largest industrial player and Nyrstar is successful in its area.
Trafigura Property
Officially, it is stated that Nyrstar “intends to put his plant in maintenance mode.” In practice, this means that all production is stopped.
Only the lease will remain in business, for now, NRK can confirm.
In an email to NRK, Steenvoorden writes that the company is deeply grateful for the commitment employees have shown and for their contribution to the business at Høyanger.
Nyrstar is a large group in the field of metal recycling and is based in the Netherlands. Nyrstar’s largest owner is the industrial giant Trafigura.
Disappoint mayor
To the Firda newspaper, Høyanger Mayor Petter Sortland says he expects an orderly process in the future.
– They will be allowed to defend the local community. They have a long lease with us at the high factory, which I see no reason to terminate. And they have obligations in terms of high waste stored at Høyanger, Sortland tells the newspaper.
