European Handball Championship 2020 for Women, European Handball Championship | Outraged by the decision to send only female judges to the European Championship

– I don’t understand, former coach of the national team of handball masters, Gunnar Pettersen, tells Nettavisen.

KOLDING (Nettavisen): The European Championship in Denmark will be the first handball championship in history with only female referees.

Critics say that the European Football Association is making a big mistake and that the attempt at equality ends with gender discrimination and a giant wave.

Pettersen: – I don’t understand.

Former coach of the national team of Norwegian handball masters Gunnar Pettersen is among those who react.

– I do not understand that. I think it is not to take women’s handball seriously. They would like to have female pairs, and we have several good ones, but to form second and third place pairs, who come from countries where their training routine is the league in Greece and Turkey … I think that women’s handball has deserved much better than that, he says. Pettersen to Nettavisen.

– a mockery

Another shaking his head is TV 2 Denmark sportscaster Dan Philipsen. He believes the decision is a mockery of women’s handball.

– I think it is politically correct to misunderstand that women should be judged by women. I say this because the referees involved are not the best referees in the world, while the players are the best in the world. There is great gender discrimination and it is completely misunderstood by the European Handball Federation, which tries to equalize men and women. The exact opposite is done here, Philipsen tells Nettavisen.

Philipsen fears that matches will be characterized by referees not keeping up with the players they form.

– Female handball players are as serious as male handball players. However, female players get referees from the second top shelf, and that is, in my opinion, the biggest gender discrimination you can do above your head. It is a gigantic own goal for the European Handball Federation. I fear that the matches are going to suffer because the best referees in the world are not there.

TV 2 Denmark commentator believes that the championship players have been reduced to guinea pigs by the European Handball Federation.

– After Christmas, the players can sit in front of the screen and watch the men play the World Cup, with the best referees. Maybe a couple of women or two will come. Why shouldn’t the best women have the best judges when the best men should have the best judges? It provokes me savagely, says Philipsen.

Sando: – Should have the best judges

National team goalkeeper Emily Stang Sando agrees that the best referees should judge the championship, regardless of gender, although she doesn’t want to put too much effort in advance.

– My personal opinion is that we should have the best judges. They should definitely be chosen for the championships, to achieve the highest possible level. There are also an incredible number of good judges. We just have to see when the fights start. It’s not something we can do anything about anyway, Sando tells Nettavisen.

On Thursday, Sando finds himself between the posts when a shocking and crowned Poland, with former Storhamar coach Arne Senstad on the bench, is on the opposite side.

– At least we shouldn’t underestimate them. They still have a lot of good players and we have to be there from the beginning. We need to stay focused on our game and race with them as much as possible. It is important above all to get a good defense, so I get help backwards. He looks great in training, says Sando.

The match between Norway and Poland will be seen on TV 3 starting at 8.30 pm on Thursday.
