Prime Minister Erna Solberg (H) says we no longer have time to wait to see if the measures work. So now they are adjusting more.

– There is great seriousness in the situation. We must take responsibility, it is absolutely necessary to avoid a new closure, says Prime Minister Erna Solberg during today’s press conference.

He asks us to stay home as much as possible and to have as little social contact as possible with others.

– My goal is that we can celebrate Christmas. It won’t be easy, but I hope, he tells VG.

These are the new measures:

  • Everyone should stay home as long as possible.
  • On very special occasions, you can invite up to five people to your home
  • We must stay at least 2 meters from people in risk groups.
  • Maximum 20 people in private events in public places and 50 in indoor events without fixed seats. Inside, there can be up to 200 people at events where the entire audience sits in fixed seats.
  • National bar stop at 24:00 and do not allow guest entry after 22:00.
  • Unnecessary domestic travel should be avoided. Exceptions: Business trips that are considered necessary and trips to leisure establishments that can be made without contact with third parties.
  • All universities, colleges and vocational schools must assess whether in the coming period they can reduce teaching and other activities that contribute to greater mobility, including pressure on public transport.
  • Requirements for a full test certificate are entered for all red countries
  • People who come without a permanent residence or an employer must stay in a corona hotel and take the test for a period of up to 10 days.

The latest rule change means that a grandmother or other person who is not a Norwegian citizen can still visit Norway, but the first part of the stay must be in a hotel.

The bar stop will go into effect on November 7. The rest of the national measures will be implemented on the night of Monday, November 9. From now on, tips such as staying home and having a maximum of five people apply. Read a more complete list of tips and advice HERE.

These are the measures that apply now

You can exercise, but limit activity.

– You can go to the gym and do other things, but we have very clear advice on this. We have not closed all activities, but be careful and limit. The more people you meet, the greater the chance of becoming infected and the greater the burden for monitoring the infection, says the Prime Minister.

The government aims to reduce the infection enough to make Christmas as normal as possible. The government will make a new evaluation of the measures before Christmas.

– The situation is very serious. If development continues in the same way, we can experience the same thing that more and more countries in Europe are doing. The fear is that the health service will collapse, says Solberg.

– Do you think you can save Christmas?

– If we get good support for the measures, the situation may be different. But the uncertainty surrounding the situation is now greater than last week, Health Minister Bent Høie said at the press conference.

This means the different rules for social contact:

  • If you are single, you may have physical contact with two or three close contacts. as if they were family.
  • On very special occasions, you can invite up to five people over – if you turn 40 or 50, you can have very close friends at home, but you can’t invite over just for fun, says Bent Høie.

Solberg says we now have to leave the holidays, in part because the combination of alcohol and many people has caused several major outbreaks:

– Some claim that previous drinking stops will lead to private parties, and the answer is: now there must be an end to the parties for a while.

The police will also enforce infection control more actively in the future.

– How fast do we have to see a sharp decrease in the spread of infection to avoid a shutdown?

– We know it takes two weeks before we see the effect. We have some data that mobility has decreased in the last week. But we must see how the effect of the infection lessens, Solberg tells VG, adding:

– The underlying pressure is very strong, and if it continues at the rate that we look down, we can speak of a total closure. In the worst case, it means that we have to ask people not to go to work.

You can travel to the cabin

– Traveling to your own cabin for a weekend is perfectly fine, but then you should avoid too much contact with others on that trip, the minister said at Thursday’s press conference.

He added that if, for example, you are from Oslo and you go to the cottage, then you should shop in Oslo and not wait to buy until you arrive.

Squeeze even more at the entrances

If foreigners are unable to present a negative corona test upon entering Norway, there is a basis for expulsion. Upon entry, you must be quarantined for ten days in a suitable place and present a negative coronal test for the last 72 hours, according to the new regulations.

– And then I must emphasize that it means that you are not allowed to enter the country. This is a basis for expulsion from Norway if you have not documented such proof, Solberg says of foreign nationals coming to Norway, whether they are tourists, visitors or workers.

Norwegian citizens should also be quarantined after being in red countries, but they will not be deported, Solberg emphasizes.

Party leader Siv Jensen from Frp believes it is time to introduce mandatory border testing as well. Today, it is just a recommendation to take a test in places like airports.

– Imported infection is one of the main reasons the infection spreads. I already proposed it in August, and now I hear that there is a parliamentary majority. Still, the government doesn’t want it, he tells VG.

More recommendations are introduced

The Norwegian Health Directorate’s recommendations to the government were released Thursday morning.

Earlier on Thursday, VG received confirmation from central sources that several of the measures now presented by the Prime Minister would be introduced.

Deputy Health Director Espen Nakstad answers questions about corona in Norway:
